Description of Kenya & Tanzania wildlife tour, Masai to Serengeti

This Kenya and Tanzania wildlife tour of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti is a ten day tripful of treats. Travelling overland in our special trucks, you get to explore the wonders of the Masai Mara National Reserve, just one of the three national parks and conservation areas where you can see the great wildebeest migration. The migration is between July and September, and during these months you will see many of the parks’ predators waiting to pounce.

Outside the migration months, the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are still some of the greatest safari destinations in the world. In the Masai Mara you have a chance to see ‘The big five’ (lions, elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards and rhinoceros) as well as cheetahs, hyenas and jackals. The Serengeti, Tanzania’s oldest park, is also home to the big five, as well as plenty of zebras and giraffes, and the Ngorongoro Crater is a whole other world altogether. Here, approximately 30,000 animals live in this ancient crater, a 25km-wide bowlful of beauties.

Environment

Wildlife – We have a specific Animal Welfare Policy to monitor and promote the welfare of animals on all our tours around the world. On this short overland safari tour, we visit two of East Africa’s most important wildlife areas, the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Serengeti National Park, where clients can observe a wide variety of wildlife. Animals present in these reserves include the Big Five (lions, elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards and rhinos), various grazing mammals that attract carnivores such as cheetahs, hyenas and jackals, as well as over 500 species of birds. In these reserves, the animals are protected from poaching and hunting and can thrive on expansive savannahs. Travel to national parks and wildlife areas can bring positive economic benefits because entrance fees contribute to the maintenance and conservation of local flora and animal species, while visitors benefit from the educational aspects of the area and take away with them an increased awareness of the need for conservation of wildlife, which they will continue to promote at home. As part of our Policy, we do not include visits to any zoological institutions that simply exhibit animals to make money, without having a specific objective that would benefit the animals directly.

Suppliers- We only use suppliers that share our commitment to the promotion of animal welfare. Working in line with ABTA’s Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism, we are committed to assessing and monitoring animal welfare throughout our supply chain. As such, the local supplier that we use on this tour for the safari into the Masai Mara adheres to our strict animal welfare standards and respects the wildlife in the park.

Community

Friends & Neighbours – We ensure that local economies benefit from our presence in the region by using locally-owned and managed accommodation. On the first day of the tour, tour leaders will also encourage clients to eat at a locally-owned restaurant in Nairobi, in order to directly support local businesses and their workers.

Travelling with Respect – To ensure that our travellers get the warmest welcome and do not offend local cultures on this tour, on our website we provide clients with a comprehensive list of tips that we recommend they follow when travelling through Kenya and Tanzania. For example, for this tour we would recommend that clients learn some key phrases in Swahili to try and connect with the local people, and we would recommend that clients on this tour research the culture, religion, traditions and local values of Kenya and Tanzania. This will not only help them to appreciate the way the local indigenous people live, but will also make their experience of East Africa more meaningful.

Read the operator's response here:

We are really sorry your tour did not meet your expectations. Our tours do require a basic level of fitness, especially on the hike to see the gorillas which can sometimes be quite long and arduous - but worth it in the end. We would welcome further feedback if you wish to. This will help us to investigate your comments and improve the trip for future passengers.
