Description of Rwanda, Kenya & Uganda wildlife holiday, on a shoestring

This African wildlife holiday takes in the three countries of Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, starting in Kigali and ending in Nairobi. An eleven day trip, travelling in a small group, there are many wildlife highlights along the way, the first being a gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which is a once in a lifetime experience for many people. Carefully monitored in order to protect these endangered species, you get to spend an hour with one gorilla family after trekking to a wild location in this spectacular mountainous landscape.

Your time in Rwanda is spent learning about the cultural heritage and painful history from its recent past, with poignant visits to various genocide memorial sites. Thankfully it is now a country where tourism flourishes and peace reigns.

In Kenya, your wildlife adventures take place around Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park, so named because it has such a dramatic setting amongst the dramatic cliffs of the Rift Valley. It is also home to giraffe, zebra, gazelle and hippos and, because there are no predators, you can go on a walking or cycling safari here.

Please note that there is a local payment of US $470 - US $500 on this tour.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Rwanda, Kenya & Uganda wildlife holiday, on a shoestring

Environment

Wildlife - As part of our Animal Welfare Policy, we only offer wildlife encounters that directly benefit the conservation and rehabilitation of the animals found in a particular area. On this short overland tour, we trek to see the endangered Mountain Gorilla in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. There are believed to be less than 800 mountain gorillas remaining in the world, and about half of that population live in this particular forest. We adhere to strict rules while visiting the families. For example, the time allowed with the gorillas is restricted to one hour to safeguard the gorilla families from excessive human contact. The direct economic contribution to the forest (clients pay for a gorilla trekking permit) helps to protect this important area from slash-and-burn farming, poaching and encroachment by human construction.

Transport – On this tour you will travel on one of our privately owned modern, powerful, comfortable and safe Mercedes Benz expedition vehicles. They are custom-built to comply with strict Euro IV emissions regulations set by the European Union. We regularly check and maintain these vehicles to the highest possible standard in order to limit carbon emissions and ensure the comfort and safety of our passengers.

Community

Friends & Neighbours – We support the local economies of the areas that we visit on this tour by using only locally-owned camp sites. For example, in Lake Bunyoni we camp at the Bunyoni Overland Resort, which is locally owned and provides important employment opportunities for people living around the lake. It is also ecologically built with local materials, so its impact on the environment is minimal. In addition, when buying food to cook en route, we go to local markets and buy fresh produce from local farmers, so our presence in the area has a direct economic benefit for local people.

A fair deal – We are proud of the fact that 95% of the specialist guides employed by us are individuals who originate from the local area. As such, it is very likely that when on excursions into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or around Lake Bunyoni, the expert guide who will join us to provide specialist knowledge will be from that country and region. We ensure that these local partners are employed under fair conditions, are paid a living wage, work reasonable hours and are given adequate support by our own staff.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of the trip was fantastic, but meeting the Gorillas was mind blowing.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you are reasonably active. There were two ladies in their late 50's and our Gorilla Trek lasted around 6 hours. Bring a head torch with you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The holiday definitely benefited local people as it gives them a change to interact with people they would normally never see i.e. the Pygmy people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

11 out of 10. The tour was absolutely fantastic which was helped by a can do, positive bunch of fellow travellers. If you have never been to this part of the world before please visit as it will take your breath away.
