Description of Machu Picchu & Galapagos Islands tour

This Macchu Picchu and Galapagos Islands tour is a spectacular trip combining two of South America’s top destinations, in Peru and Ecuador. Your journey begins in Quito in the Ecuadorian Andes. Visit the colonial heart of the city and the Equator line that cuts right through the city.

From here you fly to the Galapagos islands for a small ship cruise, the best way to make the most out of your time. Whether you're exploring on foot, under water or by motorised dinghy you will see wildlife unfolding right before you. Watch a Blue Footed Booby feeding its chick, have your toes nibbled by a curious sea lion while snorkelling or just kick back and watch the sunset over Pinnacle rock.

Please note that there are many different options for the Galapagos cruises ranging from smaller catamarans and single hulls, to much larger ships. Cruises are between 3 and 7 nights long. Contact us and we will guide you through the options and find the best fit for you.

From the islands fly back to Guayaquil on Ecuador’s mainland to catch connecting flights to Lima and then to Cusco, once the hub of the Inca Empire. Your local guide will take you behind the scenes at the local market and bring to life this fascinating city with its Spanish, Inca and modern day influences and traditions.

In the Sacred Valley visit important inca sites backed by magnificent snow capped mountains, and take the scenic train journey to Machu Picchu. If you're feeling energetic after your guided tour you can add on a hike up to Huayna Picchu for a bird's eye view of the site and mountains beyond.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Machu Picchu & Galapagos Islands tour

Environment

It is incredibly important to us to sustain the environment on the trips that we do to these countries. For example at Machu Picchu in Peru, we work with Inkaterra who have been working for 40 years to protect the environment and local communities through various initiatives including the creation of reserves, education on sustainable fishing and biodiversity monitoring. Every guest at Inkaterra has a 100% Carbon Neutral hotel stay.

We encourage people to travel overland where possible (a fantastic experience in itself in South America for the views and sense of space you get)
We urge clients to focus their trip on a few places rather than trying to connect many destinations by flights.

We encourage clients to add on time on the mainland. I was in Guayaquil in November getting ideas for add-ons that we can offer such as a visit to a sustainable Cocoa farm, or bird watching at a recently opened nature reserve just outside the city. Guayaquil is one of the places to fly in and out of the Galapagos islands but it often gets overlooked by visitors. By encouraging guests to add a night or 2 here we hope to spread the visitor spend so that it is not only focused on, and benefiting the Galapagos islands.

We donate £10 for every Galapagos booking to the Galapagos conservation trust. We also send details of the charity to our clients so that they can learn more about the careful work they do and its importance. Clients can also then make their own donation in addition to ours.

Community

We actively support community based projects. For every Peru booking we will donate £10 to the Living Heart Foundation who have several excellent projects that reach out to the remote Andean regions where children often have poor nutrition and education. They have a café in the town of Ollantaytambo which is a stopping off point for Machu Picchu. We encourage our clients to go there for a coffee or to buy some of the locally produced textiles that this region is famous for.

When creating our tailormade trips we always try to feature hotels or lodges that have a social or environmental project attached to them. For example Hotel Sol y Luna in Peru has its own foundation which helps children in the local area by giving them a chance of an “education, good health, happiness and a brighter future”.

We also work with a small company who take clients off the beaten track in Lima called Pax on Board. Clients can visit a fishing village with a local guide and learn about how important this industry is to the local economy. They eat lunch in a local restaurant. This is always done on a private basis and so usually our clients are the only tourists there.
