Description of Birdwatching & wildlife holiday, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is home to a rich diversity of birds and wildlife and this birdwatching and wildlife holiday takes you to several of the best places in the country to see it all. Costa Rica has long enjoyed a reputation for being a birdwatcher’s paradise. There are 900 species of birds here, and some 70 of those can’t be seen anywhere else in the world.

Wildlife abounds in Costa Rica, too, thanks to the enormous range of habitats here. Explore the country’s cloud forest, mountains, mangroves and coral reefs, its humid Caribbean lowlands and dry Pacific forests, binoculars at the ready for unusual flora and fauna.

It’s not possible to see everything in 16 days, but this tour is designed to give you a really rounded experience, enjoying the excellent and easy birding, the wildlife spotting, and the accommodation, which is a mix of excellent small hotels and lodges that all take sustainability seriously.

This is a small group tour, with 10 people maximum, but if you prefer to travel tailor made, it can be adapted to suit your dates and personal interests. You will be accompanied by an English speaking driver and naturalist guide throughout, with specialist local guides providing deeper knowledge at each location.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Birdwatching & wildlife holiday, Costa Rica

Environment

Though relatively small in size, Costa Rica is home to one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world, but the country's natural wealth is no accident. In the mid-20th century, Costa Rican leadership realized the importance of conservation for the future of the nation and today, 27 percent of Costa Rica is officially protected.

On this tour you will stay at several of Costa Rica's legendary eco lodges that are committed to a sustainable future. For example, Savegre is proud to offer visitors the opportunity to visit their private nature reserve of almost 400 hectares (988 acres) through a network of trails of around 30 km. (18.6 miles) that start and end at the hotel. The reserve has a spectacularly high level biodiversity that attracts visitors from all over the world and it is also a scientific field research site.

At Macaw Lodge, they have worked hard to restore and replenish the bio-diversity that supports life. It’s rewarding to see the changes that have already taken place in the area where the lodge is located as well as neighbouring communities. Land once devoted to monotonous agricultural crops that led to erosion and depletion of natural resources now teems with timber plantations, plants that provide food, health benefits and beauty, springs of fresh water and an idyllic, serene environment for relaxation and learning. It is a working, growing and evolving center for eco-tourism, research and conservation. An onsite sustainable farm operation yields fruits, vegetables, herbs and cocoa used in meals for Lodge guests and staff. They employ a number of sustainable agricultural practices including hydroponics, aquaponics, mixed crops, composting and vermiculture. Today, people from around the world come to Macaw Lodge to discover the natural wonders of Costa Rica, and see a working model of sustainable and environmentally mindful living.

Furthermore, the lodge is completely off the grid. All of their energy needs are met through solar power. Water comes from the property’s natural springs and is treated without the use of harmful chemicals for use in the Lodge and cabins. They use a closed system with sewage sent to a bio-digester and grey water going to a water bed and reused for irrigation. Conservation goes hand-in-hand with sustainable living. Their approach includes use of dual-flush toilets, dry urinals and low-flow shower heads. To reduce their energy demand, they installed LED lights and low voltage ceiling fans.

Community

Another Lodge you will stay at is Selva Verde, which was founded on the principles of environmental conservation and education. The lodge was a pioneer in Costa Rican eco tourism and is truly commited to the people and wildlife that call the Sarapiqui home. They proudly carry and support Costa Rica's Certification for Sustainable Tourism. They actively work with conservation partners, including the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community.

In fact all the lodges you will stay at are locally owned and managed. They were built using local materials by local craftsmen, to cause as little impact as possible on the environment, in areas of outstanding ornithological interest. Therefore on this tour, you will discover the very best of Costa Rica's birds while also supporting conservation programmes in each location.

It is applaudable that rather than devoting resources to developing a military, Costa Rican officials instead chose to build educational and social security programmess and despite the ensuing growth of tourism, the country remains peaceful, friendly, and open.
