Description of Croatia family holiday, for younger families

This family activity holiday provides a chance to explore some of the most stunning spots in Croatia, from the jewel-like Elaphiti islands to the atmospheric historic coastal city of Dubrovnik. A mix of island hopping, delightful locations, wonderful activities plus Croatian history and culture makes it an ideal break for adults and children alike.

Your introduction to the wonders of Croatia's islands begins straight from the airport, with a short transfer to catch a boat to a picturesque fishing village on the island of Šipan – a perfect base to explore on sea and land.

Go sea kayaking amid island neighbours offering hidden coves and secret beaches framed by palm and pine trees, with a chance to land on your very own uninhabited island – perfect for Robinson Crusoe imaginings! Šipan is also a brilliant place to explore on two wheels with a guided cycle ride through olive groves and traditional villages with plenty of rest breaks to soak up local culture or just enjoy spectacular archipelago vistas.

There's also a wonderful day in the atmospheric coastal city of Dubrovnik, with a gorgeous old town, atmospheric city walls whose battlements are dotted with old cannons, great shopping and restaurants, plus delicious ice-cream parlours as a cooling treat.

Back in the Elaphiti islands, you will take a day trip to the quiet and pretty island of Kolocep for sea kayaking, exploring sea caves plus brilliant family fun playing the Croatian beach game picigin. You'll also take the ferry to Lopud for a treasure hunt hike through a landscape dotted with ancient churches as well as views to truly treasure.

Accommodation options
There are two hotel options (depending upon availability) on this holiday:

Guest House Dubravka (Nights: 1-7)
Guest house Dubravka is located in Luka Šipanska, a village in the Northern part of the island. The stunning building was built by local people at the beginning of the 20th century and was previously used as a municipal centre. The guest house offers six equipped rooms in a truly tranquil setting. The seaside location is perfect for families with young children and the mix of international and local cuisine means that there are numerous food options to enjoy. The restaurant itself enjoys a stunning location on the boardwalk beneath exotic palm trees, a stone’s throw from the tranquil shores where children can enjoy a paddle on the sandy beach. The surrounding landscape and sea view terraces make for a truly remarkable stay at this traditional hotel on the Adriatic Sea.

Guesthouse Bozo (Nights 1-7)
Šipanska Luka is a small fishing village and so accommodation is typically in small family run guesthouses such as the Bozo. This option is ideal for families with younger children who need to share with their parents. It is just a short walk (three minutes) from the Guesthouse Dubravka, where your breakfasts and evening meals are served. Again, it has just six bedrooms, but some are larger so are more accommodating for parents and children sharing. The two double rooms are suitable for two people with space for a third on a sofa bed.
For larger families, there are four further bedrooms with inter-connecting doors. Hence, these rooms can be made into a much larger space, one with two double beds and the other with a double bed and two single beds. These interconnecting rooms come with the bonus of a kitchenette. All the rooms have air-conditioning and en-suite facilities.

Included in the price:
* Transfers: All transfers included

* Meals: 7 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 2 dinners

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Many of the activities on this holiday take place in the coastal setting of Southwest Croatia. We do everything that we can to ensure that this setting is left unspoilt.

Client families are booked to travel in groups – whether on the ferry or a boat trip or when being transferred between the hotel and the activities and the beaches on the itinerary. This reduced vehicle use minimises overall pollution to the Adriatic environment. The same can be said of flights from London to Dubrovnik: they are direct, and we put many groups on each one.

Younger children may come across as difficult to control and more likely to cause environmental damage to beaches and park territory. Our guides make sure that families are made fully aware of the importance of places like nature parks; moreover, responsible parents on our holidays ensure that children are well-behaved and respect the destinations they visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

This family holiday to the Elaphiti Islands on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast provides local guides and instructors the chance to showcase their family-engaging skills and practices, such as when they take our guests sea kayaking or trekking around the islands. It supports specialised local shops, such as the artisan ice cream producers on the islands. It also widens knowledge of Croatia’s coastal beauty in the international community, especially as the Elaphiti Islands are relatively unknown to people around the world.

While it is common to look at how a holiday benefits the destination community, the immense advantage of this trip to the four to eight-year-old community should not be ignored. These years are a period of immense physical and mental growth, and this holiday helps in augmenting both. For example, swimming in the shallow waters around the islands or kayaking will introduce children to new active experiences, boosting their confidence of the outdoors. Likewise, taking them around the streets of Dubrovnik and immersing them in new sights and smells will boost their cultural sensitivity as well as helping them to appreciate the history and culture of a different country.
