Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Inca Highlights, adventure tour

Environment

Travelling on local public bus, by foot and by train, this Inca highlights adventure tour allows you to meet the people of Peru and Bolivia in a small group, while minimising our carbon emissions impact on the local environment.

Local guides will also lend their expertise to the journey, including the ecological, historical background and cultural significance of the places we visit. Our Inca Trail Porters policy protects the rights and conditions of porters and is strictly enforced.

For other activities we choose only the best trained guides, who will help you to appreciate the importance of respecting the environment of these heritage sites and understand the conservation efforts being undertaken in various areas.

Your entrance fees will help to conserve and preserve heritage sites, such as ancient ruins, while entrance fees at national parks support the conservation efforts of forest and native animal and bird species.

Inca Trek Trail - The Inca Trail is strictly protected and a limited number of permits are issued each day. This is a necessary conservation regulation, but please be advised that this can make it difficult to obtain Inca Trail permits. We offer an alternative off-the-beaten-track trek to the Lares Valley, which is a beautiful alternative to the more famous, well-trodden trail. Your tour leader and local guides will give you a briefing on how to preserve the environment before your trek.

Community

We will visit many local shopping districts and markets along the way, giving you plenty of opportunity to support local merchants. We would encourage you to purchase traditional handicrafts from local artisans rather than mass produced goods from chain stores, as you will learn more about the skill involved in the production, while also supporting the craft itself.

We visit the Witches Market in La Paz where passengers are able to purchase handmade handicrafts from the local women in traditional dress as well as trying out their Spanish skills when bartering! When we visit Lake Titicaca you can also support the local merchants by purchasing traditional gifts made by the Amantani cultures found there.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Horse riding on the hills above Cusco, Cusco itself a beautiful city, the floating reed island and most certainly the time on the island with local family, I loved their way of life and their hospitality.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check that you have booked the right tour for you, I found later while on the tour I could have been more organised and utilised my time better had I have booked more through the tour operator than trying to go it alone-which I did before and after the tour and it wasn't easy. I hadn't discussed the various possibilities fully with the London tour office.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Clearly the time we spent on the reed islands and on the island with local families benefited the locals. And any money spent in the local economy would be advantageous. The slow boat across Lake Titicarca certainly didn't impact on the environment; I have to say I would have liked it to go somewhat faster. I would have preferred to have stayed in more small hotels run by families or stay more often in small guest houses or people's homes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. The organisation of accommodation, timing of transport and connection of transport was perfect. I was very impressed. A great mix of culture, sigh seeing and interaction. The guides were tremendous. One in particular, forgive the spelling, Ernan, a young man of 27 whose home is Cusco. I have been to many places, joined many tours and he is by far the best guide I have ever met!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming in the Amazon, learning about the jungle and meeting a Shaman, Salsa dancing in Cusco, staying with a local family in Armanti and folk dancing to traditional music, the colours, textiles and crafts, music, food and drink (I'm vegetarian and it was all incredible and fresh), breathtaking scenery, spiritual mythology, Inca ruins, learning about different ways of life and meeting fantastic people!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book it and enjoy! Be prepared for an adventure...

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - it was great having local guides who had a good understanding of the local ways of life.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10/10. Trip of a lifetime!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Cusco and Machu Picchu.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take it easy for the altitude, use ONLY potable water even to brush your teeth.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It definitely benefited local people as they make money from tourism, not so sure about the environment....especially in Machu Picchu.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Unforgettable experience.
