Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sumatra 14 day tour in Indonesia

Environment

Throughout this itinerary we’ve selected small-scale, authentic accommodation with plenty of local charm. By using small-scale hotels and guest-houses we reduce the impact on the environment compared with larger properties.

In our offices in sunny Brighton we’re also trying to do our bit. We work hard to consciously recycle as much waste as possible. We’ve even managed to implement a system to ensure our food waste is composted instead of ending up in landfill.

Our local partners in Indonesia are also on board with the need to recycle. They donate used paper to local people who make a living by collecting waste items.

We use trained guides who know how to treat the wildlife with respect and ensure visitors are doing the same. In Bukit Lawang the feeding centre for the Orangutans was stopped as the Orangutans were becoming too reliant of the food and they wanted to rehabilitate them properly to the wild. We advise customers in advance to be very aware of animal interaction to keep these beautiful creatures safe and wild.

At the accommodation in Bukit Lawang they have the facilities to recycle plastic and you are also able to refill your water bottle which we encourage guests to do as well.

In Tangkahan we advise guests due to the limited amount of electricity to keep lights and fans off at all times when not needed.

The hotel we book in Samosir is designed and half owned by local Batak people to represent the design of the traditional Batak houses you will find on the island. It's a very good experience to be able to stay in traditional style accommodation.

Community

In Medan you will visit a local's house where you will learn to make street snacks that they sell everyday to make a living. You are directly supporting the community and village by doing this trip.

In Tangkahan the eco-tourism is a big part of the community as it was set up for the people of the area to learn new skills and protect the National Park from illegal logging and poaching in the area. We use these guides to show our client's the area and our customers have a chance to partake in volunteer work if they want to when they are there.

Before our customers leave the UK we will provide them with information on Sumatra and Indonesia to advise of local customs and phrases that will help during their stay on the island.

We book only local owned accommodation and local guides throughout the itinerary, where staff are treated fairly and it means that you are directly supporting the local community rather than large chain hotels.
