Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Zimbabwe, Botswana & South Africa Safari tour

Our expert park guides have been extensively trained in how to responsibly and safely view and interact with the local wildlife. The guides will educate our guests on the local flora and fauna as well as the issues facing all creatures, plant and animal, and how they are working to conserve them. For example, we will be staying at the 3rd largest conservation in Botswana (Chobe National Park) which has divided been into wildlife management areas without fencing, a concept that allows for conservation and the free roam of wildlife within these areas. This is a non-hunting area since 1932.

Our park and local guides will instruct all guests on proper waste disposal in all areas of each country we visit. All guests are encouraged to follow the guidelines of waste disposal at all accommodation, parks and places visited. As always, guests are encouraged to always be mindful of how much waste they create and try to create as little as possible.

All of our suppliers are aware and proactive in preserving and sustaining the environments around them. Whether it be in the middle of the African grasslands in Hwange National Park or in the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, all of our suppliers meet our strict criteria regarding sustainability and responsibility of the natural environment around us. For example, our hotel in Cape Town is a fair trade hotel and uses filtered tap water in the bedrooms, not bottled water, energy efficient invertor heat pumps to heat and cool the bedrooms over conventional air conditioners and heaters, and energy saving air source heat pumps to heat hot water in the house. There are currently have three units with a combined capacity of 18kW which heat around 1 000l of water for our showers and baths.

We chose vendors that support their local community and neighbors because we feel very strongly about using local vendors rather than large scale, multinational ones. Many of the accommodations we stay at are sponsors or organizers of trusts and NPOs to better and strengthen their communities.

For example, The Hide Community Trust runs alongside The Hide and is partnered with a local community that surrounds Hwange National Park. Its aim is for the relief of poverty, the promotion of education, as well as the benefits of conservation. Its support to these communities will be through Community Capacity Building, social enterprise, education, sustainable development as well as conservation and human wildlife conflict solutions.

All of our safari and local guides are natives to each country and are chosen for their passion for introducing the local culture and wildlife to visitors. They are also very well compensated for their education, time and effort : well above the local standard.
