Responsible tourism: Costa Rica luxury wildlife tour

- Costa Rica is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world with a high use of renewable resources, including hydroelectric and wind power. As well as being one of the most environmentally aware countries in the world, it is the greenest country in Latin America. By supporting this country in encouraging our clients to visit, we are supporting the practice of green and sustainable energy.

- Guests visit the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado National Park and the Cloud Forests where a local guide will educate them about the local flora, fauna and wildlife and how they can help support its preservation. They can go on nature walks where guides ensure they understand the local issues and that the wildlife and natural surroundings are left untouched and undisturbed.

- Guests will go on a private Quetzal bird tour where they go into a private family-operated farm to view the high-altitude dwelling birds. Local guides will educate the guests about the birds and why indigenous populations across the region considered it a mystical creature and how important it is to have protected private reserves where they can live and reproduce safely.

- We use lodges that employ ethical and responsible practices, with a small footprint and an emphasis on educating guests about the surrounding environment. This improves awareness and individual responsibility. Our lodges and hotels are also environmentally sound, relying on renewable energy where possible and local produce and resources. Xandari near San Jose has four kilometres of trails filled with native birds to watch and an orchid house and greenhouse where guests can learn about the local flora and fauna and go bird watching with local guides.

Lapa Rios is an eco-lodge located in one of the world's most diverse primary rainforests - the Corcovado National Park. The hotel is ethically-responsible and has been built to create as little disturbance to the environment with thatched bungalows. The restaurant uses organic and ethically-sourced produce as much as possible. El Remanso is also an eco-lodge in its own nature reserve, ideal for nature lovers. The cabins are decorated with tropical hardwoods and bamboo and the hotel has two in-house naturalists that can share their local expertise with guests.

Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge is set on a 165-acre preserve, accessible only by boat and built in harmony with its surroundings and they offer a wide range of sustainable and eco-adventures and initiatives. Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel is owned by the ex-president of Costa Rica and it is renowned for its communal ethos and village-like layout, including its organic gardens, dairy, and greenhouses - with the produce all used in the hotel's restaurant. The hotel also has various conservation projects that the staff are eager to tell guests about.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a wildlife project in Costa Rica. Our environmental charity in Costa Rica is Kids Saving the Rainforest (, which rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals.

- Our guides are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

-Throughout their stay in Costa Rica, guests are taken to local restaurants and cafes to try out the local cuisine and experience the culture associated to their food. They are also provided with a detailed list of local restaurants and cafes that are run by locals, as well as shops that sell local handcrafts and not-for-profit organisations they can help.

-We organise a huge array of activities for guests from nature walks the in the national parks, Cloud Forests and Nicoya Peninsula from surf lessons to horse riding and hikes. These are all run by local guides, therefore supporting the local community.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy of only using local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs. The Marriott San Jose is also set in a large coffee plantation where guests can learn about the local industry. Latitude 10 on the Nicoya Peninsula offers numerous activities with local guides and experts from horse riding, canopy tours, kite surfing, yoga classes and diving and snorkelling.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a school charity based in Ecuador. Our school charity in Ecuador is the Condor Trust (, which helps encourage low-income families to send their children to school. The funds provide uniforms, school materials and books for the children.
