Description of Iran cycling holiday

Iran gets misrepresented in the press and media, and this 12 day small group Iran cycling holiday challenges every preconception you may have about this fascinating country. The people of Iran are about the most friendly and welcoming locals you can hope to meet anywhere in the world. Youíll enjoy Iranian hospitality as we cycle through quiet villages in the mountains and discover more about life here by meeting local NGOs, too. This is about cycling with an open mind and soaking up this amazing firsthand experience.

As well as cycling, we love to engage with local NGOs and experts to find out more about local issues, empowering anyone on this holiday to make a positive difference. This holiday is all about pushing yourself physically but also challenging your notions of charity, through a carefully planned mix of cycling, seeing Iranís beautiful sights, visiting NGOs and enjoying downtime, too. It all adds up to a unique adventure.

Beginning in Tehran and ending in Shiraz, youíll discover ancient cities and explore unforgettable Persepolis. Youíll cycle through beautiful mountains, sweeping deserts and quiet oasis towns, but itís the spontaneous opportunities to meet local people that often delight the most.

Bicycle hire, a support team, all entries to activities detailed below in the itinerary and 11 nightsí accommodation are included in the price of this holiday. There are also delicious dinners in Social Enterprise based training restaurants and three NGO presentations, which provide a brilliant insight into Iranís social structure and community values. We will assist you in obtaining your tourist visa and handle all the paperwork on your behalf, regardless of your nationality. To respect local law, please also be aware that women need to wear a head scarf at all times, couples should be married if sharing a hotel room and alcohol is illegal.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Water & Waste: Our commitment to the environment is supported through our recycle policy. We offer all our riders a permanent cycling bottle to use whilst on the ride. In order to reduce plastic consumption, we make every effort to purchase 50L drums as a source to fill individual water bottles. This has a significant impact on the amount of waste we produce. We also make every effort to ensure that the 50L drum is put to local recycling once empty.

Energy and Transport: Being a cycle based operation, we are very conscious of our carbon footprint and fiercely support the value of cycle based travel. Not only does this reduce the need for petrol based vehicles, it also gives riders the opportunity to discover, explore and appreciate the landscape, remote communities and offers experiences not available when travelling by bus or car.

Wildlife: In Iran, cheetah's & leopards are at the brink of extinction. We look to support local organisations and NGOs that support the future of these beautiful animals. In addition, we avoid all animal based attractions where wild animals are tamed for the amusement of tourists.

In the Iran tour, we utilize the services of a local female guide to lead the expedition. Arezoo and her family live in the north of Tehran and are actively engaged in the cycling community around the country.

Our goal is to promote understanding between cultures during this experience and aim to provide homestays where possible. This is not purely for the benefit of the traveller, but very much a benefit for the local community. The curiosity and interest from locals is incredible, especially in the smaller, more remote towns where tourists rarely venture, and almost never by bicycle.

Campaign for Change: To truly understand the country and culture, we first must be guided by local experts. To understand issues of gender equality, we will visit an NGO that focuses on assisting and empowering young disadvantaged women. We will also look to explore issues of disability and other local issues through NGOs in Tehran, Esfahan and Shiraz.

Charity and Engagement: As a group tour, we will have the opportunity to pool together a collection of money and assist a campaign or project we learn about along the way that resonates with us. This will be carried out through local experts and any and all money donated will be followed up with by future tours.
