Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

This trip includes a visit to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, which is a non-profit facility that has a strong conservation outlook and strives to maintain the sensitive wildlife that is so precious throughout the Yukon.

During their time here, guests will be able to learn about wildlife in the Yukon, as well as having the opportunity to tour the large preserve, which features a variety of indigenous wildlife in their natural habitat. Dedicated to helping injured or orphaned animals, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve helps to prevent wildlife loss and encourage rehabilitation and release, therefore helping to ensure that the Yukon maintains its incredible species diversity. By enjoying a tour of the preserve, visitors are directly contributing to the maintenance of the preserve and therefore the longevity of the rehabilitation programmes.

In addition to the above, one of the accommodations used during this trip (the Northern Lights Resort & Spa) is heavily focused on taking positive steps to reduce the environmental impacts of tourism. For example, guests are informed about rubbish recycling procedures at the lodge and are encouraged to recycle all of their waste, where possible in order to ensure that items such as plastic, paper and glass are not just thrown away. In addition to this, the accommodation has its own well-water supply and therefore they encourage minimal water usage through reduced shower times, as well as reduced linen consumption.

The Impacts of this Trip

For this trip, the maximum group size is eight people, which means that all tours to this destination do not over-saturate the community and therefore change its identity. Through the use of small group sizes we can help to ensure that the local area is not irrecoverably changed into a mass tourism destination and that the tour groups can integrate with the local community in a positive fashion, by experiencing their culture and enjoying their activities.

In addition to the above, this holiday includes several activities that are locally-owned and operated, such as dog sledding and snowmobiling in the area surrounding Whitehorse, as well as visiting the Takhini Hotsprings. By using local operators we can help to ensure that the activities use the best local knowledge and resources available, as well as injecting money into the local economy, which will encourage growth and prosperity. Furthermore, we encourage guests to use local restaurants while in Whitehorse, which again helps to prevent the larger brand chains from saturating the market and changing the town’s individuality.
