Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Self guided biking holiday in the French Alps

Environment

Our booking process is completely paperless and all of the route cards are re-usable and maintained over several seasons. We make conscious efforts to minimise waste when shopping by trying to choose products with less packaging. We recycle everything that can be recycled and encourage our guests to do the same with large well marked recycling bins on the balcony and under the bar area.

We purchase local produce where possible and we corroborate this with our local suppliers, as well as making an effort to source meat products that have not been inhumanely treated. We adapt our menus during the year to favour produce that is in season. We use environmentally-friendly cleaning products and do not use any harsh chemicals around the property unless strictly necessary.

We do everything we can to reduce carbon emissions from transport by encouraging guests to travel by train and by offering self-guided cycling holidays. Our minibus is only used to pick up guests who have damaged their bikes beyond repair and need rescuing!

Community

Our fantastic walking guides are permanent residents of the local community. Because this is a self-guided holiday, we don’t employ local guides but where possible we employ local staff for the chalet and make use of local services such as the bike hire company.

We encourage our guests to visit the local markets and make use of local activity providers such as parapenting and the fabulous local pool while on our holidays. We often shop locally for food (using the weekly market and small shops in the village) and use a local wine and beer merchant to ensure the smallest number of food miles.

On the team rest day, we book our guests into one of the small, local restaurants – one of which is organic and largely uses local produce (and producers) where possible.

A large proportion of the income derived from our holidays goes directly into the local community and we try to ensure that this is directed to small, local businesses.
