Description of Amazon eco lodge budget tour, Peru

This tailor made, three day trip is a fully guided adventure into Peruvian rainforest, respecting environmental and socially responsible aspects of this fragile part of the world. Your expert local guide will be able to share with you a vast array of knowledge not only about the flora and fauna of the rainforest, but also the lifestyles of the people who live here, as you are based in an authentic ecolodge, which is also a jungle farm managed by local people.

Starting in the port city of Iquitos, which also has an airport where you will be met, this is gateway to the Northern Amazon and only 12km to the ecolodge. This is a traditional style lodge, and although it offers basic accommodation, you will gain a true experience of rainforest life here. It also welcomes young people from the local city so that they too can experience and learn about authentic Amazonian life, ancient traditions and lifestyles.

During the three days you will have a chance to really immerse yourself in Amazonian life, learning about jungle farming, taking cooking classes, hiking through the rainforest and learning the wide varieties of plants and animals which thrive here, the birdlife being some of the most stunning you will see anywhere in the world. You will also visit a floating village (during rainy season only) as well as a community project to help urban communities in Iquitos.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Amazon eco lodge budget tour, Peru

Environment

This tour promotes environmental awareness and aims to educate on environmental issues especially concerning the Amazon Rainforest. In particular, this Amazon tour focuses on responsible contact with nature and understanding the challenges our environment faces today.

Travelers stay in an eco-lodge that is built in the traditional local style with local materials. The eco-lodge promotes a responsible use of water and uses alternative energy sources. The food that is served is locally sourced, mostly from the farm itself and the lodge therefore does not generate much waste. The little waste that is generated is taken to the city to be recycled. The farm also has its own water conservation project that allows the use of rainwater for the eco-lodge. Public transport is used when possible.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to follow guidelines that are sent to them before departure to make sure they don't leave a negative environmental footprint (for instance bring your own reusable water bottle) and they are given some more tips and instructions in the welcome presentation.

Community

All our tours respect and promote the host communitiesí culture. Activities on all our tours focus on the traditions and local culture and reality of the visited communities and have an additional educational function. For instance, visitors can participate in workshops on traditional architecture or agriculture, handicrafts, local food and cooking habits, etc. The income that our and similar tours generate, encourages communities to conserve these traditions.

We aim to provide an authentic experience for tourists and a culturally sensitive, respectful encounter between tourists and hosts. Nothing is put into scene and people are not asked to pretend or act differently than they normally do. Tourists are informed about the particular culture and customs in the community they will visit before they arrive and they will be made aware of any rules of behavior they should respect. Part of the profits of our tours supports the social or environmental projects that were visited on the tour and that benefits the community as a whole.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting to see the Amazon jungle and all the luscious plants, animals and insects. Never a dull moment, getting to see the monkeys and sloths is something that I will always remember.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Know that it is rustic, no power at the lodge, no hot water, no ac, pack bug spray and you might want to bring bottle water or a filter of some sort. The water was boiled over open flame so a smokey flavor is present. Some people may think it is bad, but it is safe.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We visited rescue facilities, we supported locals by just being there and exploring their country. Our stay was short and I was with my 5 year old son, hard to say how or what our impact was.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I loved it. She was perfect and our entire trip worked great with her and I just can't say enough about that woman and all that she knows. She truly cared for us, especially with my son. She knew the jungle and all the things around, felt completely safe and relaxed with her.
