Lima and Cusco holiday in Peru, local experience

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Visitors will learn more about environmental challenges that different groups of people face in Peru, both in urban and in rural areas, and which are getting worse by climate change. These tours aim to bring awareness on important environmental issues such as waste management, water issues, contamination, sustainable agriculture and food supply.

The accommodation in Lima, Cusco and Ollantaytambo are small family-owned lodging that promotes the saving of energy and water. A lot of the food that is served on the tours is locally sourced, fresh food and it therefore does not generate much waste or needs transport. The little waste that is generated is taken to the city to be recycled.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to follow guidelines that are sent to them before departure to make sure they don't leave a negative environmental footprint (for instance bringing your own reusable water bottle and not leaving garbage behind in rural areas) and they are given some more tips and instructions upon arrival. Tourists can act as a good example for the local population by recycling, picking up waste and not using single-use plastic bags.

All our tours respect and promote the host communitiesí culture. Activities on all our tours focus on the traditions and local culture and reality of the visited communities and have an additional educational function. For instance, visitors can participate in workshops on traditional architecture or agriculture, handicrafts, local food and cooking habits, etc. The income that our and similar tours generate, encourages communities to conserve these traditions.

We aim to provide an authentic experience for tourists and a culturally sensitive, respectful encounter between tourists and hosts. Nothing is put into scene and people are not asked to pretend or act differently than they normally do. Tourists are informed about the particular culture and customs in the community they will visit before they arrive and they will be made aware of any rules of behavior they should respect.

This tour includes visits to various environmental and social projects, which do not only aim to raise awareness but also benefit the organisations visited. The accommodation in Cusco is a social enterprise and your stay directly supports the work of their NGO with indigenous communities.
