Description of Small group hiking holiday in Romania, 9 days

This hiking holiday in Romania is a small group, guided tour not only through quiet rural landscapes but also through a country rich in traditions and cultural heritage. Starting in Bucharest, we take an overnight train to the Bucovina region which, similar to its neighbouring Moldovita region boasts forested hills, traditional wooden houses, ancient monasteries and the most fascinating history.

We also hike around the Maramures region, where villagers still don traditional clothing and traditional art forms such as wood crafts, folk music and dance are still the norm. This region is also famous for its UNESCO wooden churches.

Walking between three to five hours most days we have plenty of time enjoying the landscapes in and around the Eastern Carpathian slopes but also explore some historical greats, highlights of which include the brightly coloured Merry Cemetery at Sapanta, the 14th century monastery and wooden church at Bârsana and the traditional village of Manastirea Humorului.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Small group hiking holiday in Romania, 9 days

Environment

On our Hiking Romania tour, you will experience hiking through the rural countryside of Romania. Due to most of the itinerary being on foot we are reducing pollution and carbon emissions and the expert guide will make sure the group do not litter or leave waste along the way. You can see some of the natural flora and fauna of the regions as well as some of the most beautiful landscapes.

Community

You can experience two very different regions of Romania staying in locally owned guesthouses along the way. In the Moldovi?a region you will see the traditional Hutsules community and get to view the Romanian art of egg painting. This allows you to get a real sense of the communities that live in this region. You will also be able to compare and learn about the different architecture styles in this region from the painted frescoes found in Bucovina to the wooden style churches in Maramures. You will also visit various traditional villages, getting the chance to experience the authentic rural communities, often small and speckled with horse-carts.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The best experience was getting off the beaten path and seeing the regional landscapes, meeting local people and getting to know the culture of the area. Our guide was a local who knew people along the way, was very familiar with the history and culture of the area, and knew the trails first hand.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We stayed and ate in local guesthouses.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.
