Responsible tourism: Greece food and cultural tour, Athens experience

Our tour focuses for the greater part on the traditional natural products, crafts & skills found in some workshops and shops in the old town of Athens before visiting wineries in both Namea and the Attika peninsula.

In particular, the Papagiannakos Winery was especially designed and built in Greece according to innovative bioclimatic standards and represents a first in energy efficient viticulture in the region.

Olive oil production in the region is over 5000 years old & the oils we concentrate on are the product of the best quality organic olives from different regions which are harvested by the same sustainable methods used continuously from ancient times. Similarly, the woodcrafts & local spirit production along with many others experienced are produced with local labour and in a sustainable way.

We consider guest comfort important & our choice of hotel reflects the need for service but also tradition and environment such that clean energy policies are in place such as conversion of all lighting to led and other energy efficient methods from recycling to the use of solar and heat pump use for water heating.

Our focus is on the provision of an ‘Authentic experience’ which is rooted in ‘real Greece’ with all the best that has to offer. This is found in the classic sites of course that we visit but more importantly also in the people forming the connection between this past and modern Greece as it is lived by its current inhabitants.

Although done as a fun experience, the crafts & production & experience of the holiday is tilted towards practices hundreds and in some cases thousands of years old which are still thriving & form the part of the modern economy. This gives an understanding of both the past & modernity whilst at the same time supporting the local community who preserve these things. To do this we need the help of local producers & craftsmen and also local guides and knowledge.

At both archaeological sites visited we also support the local communities by direct employment of ‘on site’ expert guides and tourism in both places is essential for the local economy.
