Responsible tourism: Bulgaria hiking holiday

On our hike of Bulgaria you have often challenging hikes through Bulgaria’s famous mountain ranges. The majority of the itinerary is spent on foot therefore leaving little carbon footprint and we make sure the group do not litter along the way. You will be able to see some of the most spectacular landscapes in Bulgaria including the Pirin Glacier Lakes and learn about the flora of the region especially in the Karst parts of the Pirin Mountains.

Clients are advised to bring a reusable water bottle and avoid plastic while on the mountain. All rubbish is taken back to the villages where we can dispose of it properly and litter is never left on the mountains.

This is a small group tour with maximum 12 people, therefore keeping the effect on the environment to a minimum. Our local guide advises clients where they can and cannot walk in order to protect the local fauna and flora.

On this tour clients are encouraged to engage with locals in the communities we visit on this tour, whether it be learning a few words of the local language or purchasing some local produce.

You will get the chance to visit the Rila Monastery and learn about the unique wood carvings and wall paintings that are traditional in Bulgaria. While entrance to the monastery is not included in the price of the tour, should you wish to pay the small extra sum, your fees will go towards the upkeep of the monastery. In the area surrounding the monastery, clients have the option to purchase products made or grown by the local community.

Staying in small villages in the countryside, the accommodation is generally small and locally run, employing people from the surrounding area. You will be accompanied by a local guide who will provide you with responsible travel advice.

In Tevno Ezero you will spend the night in a local mountain hut by the lake to really get a feel for the environment. You finish the tour in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, where your guide will encourage you to try local restaurants and cafes to try.
