Description of Budapest to Dubrovnik cultural tour

This Eastern Europe cultural holiday takes you on a stunning journey through seven countries in two weeks: Hungary, Serbia, Belgrade, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Croatia. Travelling north from Budapest, the capital of Hungary and ending up in Dubrovnik in Croatia, otherwise known as the Pearl of the Adriatic in the south.

The great capital cities that we visit along the way, as well as Budapest, are Belgrade, Pristina and Tirana, with the coastal UNESCO cities of Dubrovnik in Croatia and Kotor in Montenegro competing for most spectacular urban spots along the way too.

This trip is a wonderful way to travel through the cultural past and present of these great countries, from the Ottoman history of Tirana in Albania, the Byzantine beauty of Macedonia to the more recent turbulent and tragic history in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, both of which are adapting to more peaceful times and sharing their natural and cultural heritage by welcoming tourists with open arms.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

All of our Group Tours through Europe use local public transport to get between cities and points of interest. We use this mode of transport to keep carbon emissions low and it is often the most practical and efficient way of travelling. This is also an excellent opportunity to get chatting to locals and learn about the local culture, seeing the way the region changes outside your window. When travelling long distances, where possible we use comfortable overnight trains. Using trains instead of taking flights keeps our carbon emissions low and maximises the time spent in each city.

We try to stay in locally owened hotels and apartments throughout this tour, benefitting the local economy as much as possible. Accommodation is chosen based on the location, comfort and cleanliness on the rooms rather than the extra facilities on site. This means you spend more time out exploring than in your hotel

On this tour we visit Devil’s Town - your tour leader will tell you about these bizarre landscapes and how they are formed.

Visits to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and national parks are both included and optional on this tour, including Dubrovnik’s City Walls, Kruja and Devils Town. Devil’s Town was declared a natural monument by the Serbian Government in 1995 and visiting this site helps to give money back into the local communities who live nearby, protecting the site for generations to come.

Community

Throughout the tour, your experienced Tour Leader will recommend restaurants and cafes when meals are not included. These restaurants are hand-picked for being small and owned by local families or businesses. They are also chosen for their local cuisine and their ability to serve large groups. Included on this tour is entry to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as boat journey down Matka Canyon. The entry fees for these sites go towards maintaining, restoring and protecting the cultural sites we visit. Furthermore, the use of local guides help to explain the historical background and cultural significance of the places we visit. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and get to know the many challenges currently facing these sites.
