Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Tourism in Finnish Lapland has become a major source of employment and income, replacing traditional industries such as forestry. For this reason, we must take a great deal of responsibility - socially, environmentally and economically - in these remote areas of natural beauty. We fully appreciate the impact of tourist visits to local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that our trips have a positive effect.

This holiday operates in the beautiful, unspoilt areas of Finnish Lapland. For this reason, we ensure that all guides implement a strict leave no trace policy and ensure that this is followed for the duration of your holiday. All activities are operated by knowledgeable, local guides who have a wide understanding of the region.

The Insightful and cultural activities included on this trip, such as Ice fishing and the husky safari, are ideally suited to the remote wilderness terrain surrounding Kuusamo as they help to reduce the carbon footprint due to the limited use of cars for transfers etc. The dogs themselves are a traditional form of transport in these barren landscapes and therefore our suppliers make sure that they are well cared for in accordance with Swedish laws. When the snowmobiles are in use, two people drive one snowmobile, limiting the number of harmful chemicals that would be emitted should each guest drive their own. Snowmobiles are a way of life for the local people. They are the only means of keeping in contact with remote reindeer herders and communities as the road infrastructure is not extensive. All trails are well managed. The alternatives to snowmobiles would in most cases be large, off-road vehicles, that produce high levels of gas emissions.

The Impacts of this Trip

This family orientated holiday provides a cultural itinerary which focuses on the use of services provided by the community. For example, the reindeer farm is local, and the owners are extremely enthusiastic to share their farm and their knowledge with visitors, teaching them the aspects of their daily lifestyle. The husky centre is also a local business, where visitors learn about the importance of the animals and their vitality to the Finnish economy and lifestyle throughout the years. It is beneficial both to the local community and the guests themselves to share this unique and vibrant culture for such knowledge and understanding contribute to the preservation of age-old traditions and also the natural landscape. Tourism has proved to be the most vital industry in this region over the years and has had a positive impact both socially and economically on the local people living in and around Kuusamo.

This Finnish-owned hotel strives to provide traditional local delicacies in one of its numerous restaurants. For this reason, there is a focus on the use of sustainable, local produce native to the region. Such policies enhance the guest's cultural experience whilst also providing an income to local businesses who provide the sourced goods.
