Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Gran Canaria cycling camp tour

Environment

Even though cycling is the most important focus in this camp, we can’t forget our passion for food. Gran Canaria with its island weather provides it all, but the best delicacies to try here are definitely from the sea. Seafood dishes are very popular in Canary islands and every time we are here, we try to blend in by ordering local caught fish. We support small places as well as larger more known local restaurants like Samsara or Meloneras. When stopping for a meal or just a mid-training snack, we make sure most of the produce is locally grown. It would be a crime to buy some fruits that are not from the island as the climate provides us with everything we need!

All that being said, we make sure to enjoy this paradise on earth with respect. We choose wisely how we travel around the island. It’s a small place, so no car transportation is needed, which is great. Everything is done just be spinning the wheels of our bikes because we believe that going by pedal power is the most responsible way of moving forward.

Community

Even though Gran Canaria can be seen around in one day, it can’t be fully experienced in as short a time as that. That’s why we have locals who can help to guide us through the best places of interest in local towns. Maspalomas is one of them – here we have been staying for years and every time we find something new through the advice from the locals.

Every time we are on this wonderful island we make sure to check if anything has changed over the year – if there is something new then we can suggest our guests to check it out! Being still in Europe but so close to Africa is a great experience so we encourage guests to bring home something from their trip. Some small purchases can be a big deal for local craftsmans and a good boost to local businesses when it is a low tourist season in Canary islands. We acknowledge that we are the “early bird” travellers, so why not open the season for locals in the best possible way!

Our cycling groups are private and not very large, but we recognize the fact that if we all come together and support even the local small cafe's, that is making a visible boost to locals wallets and the smiles on their faces.
