Responsible tourism: Jordan tour of biblical sites

Taking the following actions into consideration to reduce environmental impacts:

Recycling facilities are available in vehicles and on some site. We ensure these are used by all staff and guests appropriately.

We use recycled paper in our envelopes, laminate information sheets, and minimize our paper usage for printing by condensing emails to fit on one page.

All drivers and guides have a good knowledge of environmental history and practice. We encourage discussion with guests about environmental themes to highlight achievements in conservation as well as to gain an understanding from our guests about the environment they live in.

We encourage our suppliers to make use of alternative energy sources where possible, (such as wind, solar power), and to actively recycle waste where such facilities exist.

Our programs are all tailored to suit small groups, thereby trying to minimize the impact on environment whilst allowing clients to enjoy their holiday with maximum flexibility and personalised service.

Our most important responsibility is to ensure that the financial benefits of tourism are passed down throughout the entire company, including the office staff, guides, trekking staff (porters, cooks, horsemen) and other communities in which we work with. We have listed below some of the measures that we have taken to ensure that this is done.

• We encourage the use, and only make use of (unless not possible) local suppliers and services. This includes locally produced food and crafts, locally owned and managed accommodations wherever possible, thus ensuring the funds invested remain within the country.

• We employ local guides on all our tours, treks, cultural and faith programs, and make use of local labour in order to contribute to the economy and development of the local community.

• We encourage our clients to purchase locally produced items from indigenous craft markets. We also inform our clients that bargaining, and trading goods is the norm, but to keep in mind that the community has to make their living from this, and not to try and bargain unfairly.

• We also support the activities of local cooperatives such as the Wadi Musa Women’s cooperative and the cooperative of Ibn Hamida.
