Responsible tourism: Vuelta a Espana 2017 race viewing tour, Spain

Northern Spain is one of the most beautiful places on the Earth. We believe it is also pretty underrated as well. The biggest treasure of the northern part of Spain is the stunning nature. We are doing a lot of tours here, so in our best interest is to protect the greenery as well as some few small towns and villages. We are, of course cycling through them on our bicycles and not polluting the air or disturbing the hundreds of bird species. The wide variety of wildlife is protected in many national parks. We make sure that our tours here included a visit or go right through these parks so the guests can learn something more about the treasures of nature.

Even though we will participate in a big event – La Vuelta a Espana, we believe the local community is very conscious about the impact of large crowds out in the open. Over the years we haven’t experienced neglect from the awesome cycling community and every time we take this trip we endeavour to leave the beautiful beaches clean and the roads just as we left them.

We have included a ride through Picos de Europe in the tour. This is one of the most beautiful nature parks in Europe. It is necessary to preserve these kinds of gems, so we do the best we can through donating if possible, or cleaning after ourselves. The park also have a rare bear species Cantabrian brown bear. It is also home to a large butterfly and eagle population that we encourage our guests to look out for.

La Vuelta visits Northern part of Spain every year and believe it or not, it seems like a completely different country. One interesting part we will visit is the Basque country. The piece of land squished between France and Spain has its own language and traditions that we ourselves try to understand and teach our guests. It is very respectful of visitors so we try to engage with locals. We encourage our guests to stay in specially selected hotels or guesthouses that we have got to know over the years. They are mostly family owned, so we know the people that we support and in the long evenings we can chat or have a dinner with them!

Every time when we are here, we include one famous (maybe even infamous!) climb in our itinereary. It is the mighty l’Angliru – feared by many for its steepness and massive elevation. Locals around this climb can be sure that every year around summer they will meet us and participate in the business, providing our guests with a meal, a bed to sleep or some interesting story to tell!

In more rural parts our guests will find more hand made crafts and foods than in the bigger cities. Cantabria and Asturias are known for their nature and if we or others see a unique craftsman's work using wood or stone, that is definitely something we would encourage our guests to buy!

We also should thank la Vuelta organizers for choosing finish places close to very beautiful and picturesque towns. It's been done with a purpose - to show all of Northern Spain's natural wonder. For example the city of Oviedo has an immensely rich history and beautiful architecture. We try to encourage the guests to take a look inside some museums or other places of interest to learn about the city's history.
