Description of Antarctica, South Georgia and Falklands holiday

This adventurous small ship cruise to Antarctica, one of the most remote places on Earth, will prove unforgettable for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. Sailing from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, departures are staggered to help relieve the pressure on a place with little infrastructure to cope with tourist crowds.

You’ll cross the turbulent Drake Passage as you embark on a 21-day voyage of discovery, through the great white continent of Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia, following in the footsteps of the legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Tourism in Antarctica is strictly regulated with no more than 100 people from any cruise ship allowed on land at a time. That is one of the clear advantages of taking a small ship cruise through this pristine environment – there’s no waiting around bored on board for your turn, as with usually no more than 200 passengers on the ship, while one group is exploring on shore, another can do so on water using Zodiac boats or even kayaks.

Small ship cruises enable you to reach narrower passages and locations that others cannot, making it far easier to get up close with the wildlife here: vast colonies of breeding seabirds; fur and elephant seals, and of course penguins. Whether on a shore excursion or on the ship’s observation deck, your camera will rarely be out of your hand.

Naturally, seeing the rugged beauty of these landscapes and the creatures that inhabit them is the main attraction of an Antarctic holiday. But although the ship has luxurious amenities including saunas, spa, gym and swimming pool, this is more an expedition than a normal cruise. Expert lectures on everything from penguin behaviours to geology and the fascinating history of the region will see you return not only enthralled, but knowledgeable enough to become polar ambassadors.

As the ice melts in Antarctica, it will become ever easier to reach this magnificent, mysterious scenery, and controversial too. Travelling aboard a small ship ensures your impact is kept to a minimum and also that your experience is much more satisfying.

The itinerary below provides plenty more detail on what to expect but no words can adequately convey the excitement you’ll feel on approaching a colony of King penguins or barking elephant seals, the fearsome sound of a glacier calving into the sea, or the sight of dolphins swimming in the ship’s wake.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Antarctica is the largest wilderness on earth and remains relatively unaffected by large scale human activities. To keep it that way, IAATO – the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators has set out guidelines and regulations to protect and preserve this unique and pristine environment. All tourism-related activities are therefore planned and conducted with both environmental protection and safety in mind.

We use highly regulated, licensed vessels which are well equipped to operate in these remote ecosystems. We are fully compliant with all rules set out by IAATO. We carefully choose the ships we want to charter, and its small size has a far lesser impact on shore landings. We see our voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula as an expedition, not a sightseeing trip. Smaller ships, such as ours can navigate narrow water ways, and by carrying fewer passengers generates far less waste. We also carry any waste back to our home port, unlike some of the larger ships which do not allow for this.

Our pre-departure information pack provides our passengers with all the information required for their expedition, from what to take with you to practical advice on how to minimise your impact on the Antarctic environment and how to interact with the wildlife on the continent.

The Impacts of this Trip

On this trip you will visit the local community living on the Falkland Islands. Because of the fact that there are only a few industries here and very little contact with the outside world, they always welcome us with open arms. All the guided services and hotels on the island are run locally and food and other commodities are sourced locally, meaning profits go directly to the communities.

We align ourselves with the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, which aims to conserve the Mawson Huts at Cape Denison in East Antarctica. The foundation was first established in 1997 and has already funded and organised more than ten expeditions to the site.

We also work with three different charities including Project Peru who run an orphanage in Zapallal, a shanty town outskirts of Lima. And ANIA, a high-profile Peruvian NGO working with children to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it efficiently.
