Responsible tourism: Bird watching tour in Nepal

On this trip we focus on bird conservation, and we would like to bring two unique projects into attention: the community managed Jatayu Vulture Restaurant in Amaaltari, and the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary in Lumbini.

Jatayu Vulture Restaurant is initiated and founded by Tharu Lodge Manager, Dhan Bahadur Chaudhary, and is joint venture of Bird Conservation Nepal & ITNC. Our aim on this trip is to acquaint guests with the alarming plight of the vulture and encourage support in preserving and regenerating the population. The main threat to the vultures of the Indian Sub-continent is a painkiller given to cattle, called diclofenac, which causes acute kidney failure in the vultures.

Jatayu Vulture Restaurant is not your regular restaurant - it´s a restaurant for vultures. The vulture feeding centre provides multi-faceted benefits: rescue and care for old cattle, supplies non-toxic food source to vultures and provides village income from home stays, guiding etc. The project has recently extended to vulture breeding as well, to help reestablish a healthy vulture population.

Lumbini Crane Sanctuary is a joint effort between Nepalese Crane Conservationists and International Crane Foundation, USA. It was initiated in 1989 to study the status of Sarus Crane in Nepal. the research identified that natural ecosystems of the Lumbini Garden dedicated to the birth place of Gautam Buddha and the surrounding area was an ideal site for crane conservation initiative. On December 25, 1994 an agreement between Lumbini Development Trust and ICF was signed for 50-year lease of 265 acres land to establish Lumbini Crane Sanctuary.

LCS aims to conserve natural environment and ecological processes by:
1. Restoring and creating natural habitat diversity which is the representative of Nepalese Central Terai, with special consideration of Sarus Crane Conservation.
2. Establishing an education facility and wild garden demonstrating solutions to modern conservation challenges.
3. Involving local people in conservation and management of natural resources of surrounding areas.

The bird conservation projects which we visit on this trip are community driven, and visitors are a vital income source for the communities, who provide guiding and education for guests as well as local youth. Youth engagement is a central part of the community lead projects and it ensures the sustainability of the ongoing conservation efforts. On this trip, your visit will actively encourage and support these efforts.

While staying with us, do take the time to visit our social projects around the lodge area. Here we run a school for children from disadvantaged families, and support with funding for their onward education in government schools. This is a joint project with the Swissair Staff Fund for Children in Need. The school currently has fifty-five students from the surrounding villages, who are covered for health care, two meals/day, uniforms, and supplies. To secure ownership and a sense of involvement, the parents work in the school’s organic garden to grow vegetables for the children’s meals. This also provides them with training they can use to improve family nutrition. We encourage our guests to visit the school and if they wish, to give a donation of any form.
