Description of Kamchatka Peninsula rafting holiday in Russia

This extraordinary Kamchatka Peninsula holiday in Russia’s eastern Pacific region really is a one off. Travelling in a small group, with local expert guides, you will spend most of the time exploring this land of volcanoes, rivers, forests and Pacific coastline by river rafting, as there are hardly any roads. To get a sense of the scale of things, the Kamchatka Peninsula is about the same size as Italy but with a lot fewer people, and a vast array of wildlife including brown bears.

After an overnight flight from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, your Kamchatka journey starts with a helicopter ride from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky which takes us into the wilderness, where our river rafting odyssey begins. You don’t need a high level of fitness for this trip, as the rivers carry us easily, but some stamina for the wilderness camping is recommended. You don’t need rafting experience either, as we travel on four seater, inflatable catamarans with high safety standards and helmets and life jackets are supplied. The white water category is generally 2, with elements of 3-4 at certain points. You will have expert instructor/guides throughout.

We raft primarily on the River Opal and then on either the Vershinskaya or Zhupanova Rivers, with at least four full days of rafting, with transfers by helicopter when necessary. If you are keen on fishing, this is an amazing aspect of the holiday, with equipment on board for everyone if you fancy catching dinner to be cooked on our nightly campfire. The rivers are home to grayling, Arctic char and many types of salmon and the water is often crystal clear too.

The rest of the holiday is spent exploring the volcanic regions, with two trips to see the Zhupanovsky caldera, as well as the spectacular Valley of Geysers, which you see by helicopter. Finally, your last day is spent on the Pacific coast where you take a marine safari to see the prolific bird and marine wildlife on this stunning coastline. Please note that in case of bad weather or military trainings of nuclear submarines, we will visit the Paratunskiye thermal springs instead.

The best time to visit Kamchatka for a rafting holiday is during the summer months. During this time temperatures can go up to as high as 25 degrees Celsius during the day, and down to as low as about five at night, although they are often much higher than that at nighttime. There are also many hours of sunlight during this time, due to the Kamchatka’s northern location meaning that we have much more time on the water and also to spot wildlife. Late in the season you may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Community

Kamchatka is a museum of Nature. It world heritage. There are 6 areas under UNECSO protection. It is our main target to protect it for future generations.

Organising our tours we work directly with the Cluster of Natural State Reserves in Kamchatka. We pay directly to those organisations for services we book.

Some areas of Kamchatka became overcrowded during the high season and our company prefers to organise tours to the places which are not very touristic. Our guests can see all the main sights of Kamchatka but we prefer to show the places where there are no tourists on the way. Only few real admires and nature protectors or scientists whom we can meet during our trip. In touristic places is too noisy and not possible to feel the real sense of Nature. Our travel routes are in the places where you stay with nature face to face.

To show Kamchatka we also travel by local rivers by catamarans but we use engine only in case of emergency. The places we are traveling around is not inhabited by people a lot, so we respect local citizens who prefers to stay out of touristic places. For local people in that areas the most important thing is not to harm nature because rivers and forests give them the possibility to live. During our trips nature does not suffer. We do not leave any non biological waste during travelling on ground and water paths and after camps.

In this area there are small ethnic groups and we very respect their traditions and customs. By visiting villages with local ethnic people we hope to encourage them not to lose touch with the practices of their ancestors, and enable to gain income from tourism where there are few opportunities for employment.

We promote the scientific approach for the understanding of the environment and the population in full contact with it. We promote the collaboration between our guests and the local expert of the territory to identify specific aspects as the relationship with the nature and the integration with foreigner visitors. Our local guides explain how the community are benefited by the developing of the local projects explaining how they are organised and how we monitor them.

We collaborate with the local organisation in order to get know our travellers about the culture and the habits of local populations. We inform about local initiatives in order to promote them to our travellers during their staying.

All travellers are pre-informed about the social and political situation of the destination: At arrival we make a brief with our guests informing about how we collaborate with the local population.
At the same time we inform how we move into their territory and live with them giving all suggestions on how to best integrate with their traditions and cultures.
