Description of Greek islands sailing & climbing holiday

Hiking through mountain and coastal scenery by day, then relaxing and sleeping on a sailing boat by night – that’s the exciting combination at the heart of this Greek Islands sailing and climbing holiday. You’ll explore the striking Dodecanese islands by land and sea, accompanied by experts and enthusiasts, on this diverse eight day adventure. Eat in local restaurants and meet the friendly locals, too, so that by the time you return home, you’ll have gained a unique perspective on this beautiful country and its people.

You’ll sail around breathtaking coastlines, stopping in quiet bays and inlets for snorkelling and swimming, or hiking along mountain trails to discover unspoiled beaches. This active itinerary includes two days on Kalymnos, home to limestone rock faces that offer superb climbing, with 80 scalable crags and more than 2,000 different routes on offer. You’ll be climbing under the expert guidance of instructors, with training available for beginners. During this eight day holiday you’ll visit the islands of Kalymnos, Pserimos, Leros, Lipsi and Kampos. We may also be able to visit beautiful Astypalaia, weather permitting.

After each day’s activities, you’ll return to the boat and sleep on board, winding down to the rhythms of life at sea. There’s also the chance to learn how to sail in what has to be one of the most gorgeous seascapes in Europe. And of course, there will be plenty of time simply to swim or snorkel, discovering the underwater life of the Dodecanese, too.

We approach sailing as an ideal way of transportation, benefitting from the wind power as much as possible and limiting the usage of engines just to the entrance and exit from harbours. For us, sailing around the Greek islands in a small sailing skipper boat is the best way of exploring the islands in opposition to bigger cruise boats or high-speed oil-fuelled boats. The feeling of deep silence when deploying the sails and being pushed forward just by the wind is one of the most intense moments of the trip.

Additionally, sailing is an activity that requires extreme caution in waste management and organisation in the boat. We pay special attention to this matter by instructing our travellers on plastic bottle collection and recycling and toilet waste management. Also as part of our daily routing when visiting remote beaches and areas around Astypealea we encourage our travellers to collect any rubbish we encounter as to contribute as much as possible to the improvement of the local environment.

Tourism in Greece is developing in multiple directions, sometimes focused on mass-tourism and big cruise boats that pass by the islands and contribute in a negative way just developing the harbour areas of the main and biggest islands while unbalancing and shifting the development away from smaller places and inland towns.

Our main contribution with this tour consists in putting the focus on a different way of travelling the Greek islands, by stopping in more rare and un-visited places like the islands or Patmos and Kampos and encouraging our travellers to go on treks to explore the islands, passing by the smaller inland village, where the ways of life are completely away from tourism.

Apart from our contribution with the design of the itinerary we also make great efforts when selecting our staff and collaborators. We always choose working with local people, if possible from the islands we visit. Kalymnos is nowadays a very popular, world-known climbing destination and many international companies and instructors are based on the island. While partnering with locals we contribute to the promotion of rock climbing as a tool for local development for local communities who live in the island.
