Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Luxury Kenya safari, Laikipia Plateau, Masai Mara & coast

Environment

The camps that we have selected for the itinerary are all small and intimate properties that aim to give back as much as they take. As a tour operator, we recommend camps and properties which operate responsibly to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on the care of the land and the people.

Loisaba Camp focuses on its sustainability and waste management in the Laikipia Plateau. Its core efforts of long-term sustainability, such as its 120 solar panels and its water use from nearby springs, not only demonstrate environmental commitment, but also show their commitment to the wildlife of Loisaba and Kenya. They regonise that wildlife and livestock can and need to co-exist with managed regional grazing, and work towards supporting wildlife and research programmes in the local area. On the coast, Waterlovers Resort is extremely concerned and committed to the environment, and when it was first built, no plants, trees or flora was cut and as a result, the lodge still has a family of Colobus monkeys living on the plot, bush babies visiting at night and an array of birdlife making an appearance.

Community

Loisaba Camp’s key values outline their social commitment and how tourism can coincide delicately with the local people. They respect the traditional and pastoral values, livelihoods and grazing areas; believe that the conservation can pay and bring benefit to the local communities; and support an inclusive workplace that promotes diversity. In the Masai Mara, Elephant Pepper Camp continues to work with the local community, creating a balance of income from tourism for the local community landowners and the conservation management. In Waterlovers Resort on the coast of Kenya, the small property is involved in numerous environmental and social projects. Waterlovers donates school books, equipment and desks to the local schools in a project called ‘Sunshine For Kids’. Another project is ‘Rainbow For Kids’ which focuses on the wellbeing of the teachers. Since most of the local teachers work voluntarily and often did not complete the full amount of education themselves, the project believes that with European experience and teaching material, the teachers can be supported and motivated before the class.
