Responsible tourism: South Africa self drive walking holiday

Environment

On this self drive holiday there is important economic input which goes directly to conserving the environment and includes fees paid to different protected areas such as: The Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg which protects this section of the famous mountain fauna and flora, Isimangaliso World Heritage Site, Pongola Game reserve and the Kruger National Park and all the conservation practises which take place within the park. Guests are briefed on self drive techniques when entering the different parks to add to their enjoyment but at the same time respecting the local fauna and flora. We also include information on ethical camping techniques for use while camping in the different campsites on the itinerary. Wise water use is a priority and we educate guests on re-using plastic water bottles and limiting waste. We recommend different places for doing the shopping for their onward journey where the money can go directly to different merchants rather than big supermarket chains along the way. All the camp sites and lodges maintain sound conservation practices.

Community

All the different spots visited on this itinerary include accommodation establishments that employ the local community and include the different National Parks where the locals are employed as rangers, management and cleaner etc. so direct monetary input is appreciated and goes in uplifiting each areas local communities. The Northern section of the Kruger National Park is a community concession area owned by the Makuleke people who now live adjacent to the park. These people made a land claim on the National Park and were successful in claiming ownership, and now charge the different concession users levies to conduct tourism business on this land within the park so with the guests going to this area they contribute to maintaining probably the wildest area left in South Africa as pristine and at the same time uplift the local community with direct monetary input...so it is a great win-win situation. All these endeavours are apart from our Wild Coast promise where we start the holiday and here we have many different ways of assisting the community, the biggest being bringing international clientele to an area normally overlooked by most operators and visitors, but herein lies the gem and we provide monetary input to the local communities by taking our guests through this region on foot and encourage them to buy local curios and artifacts as well as food produce at the local markets.
