Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Bali family tour, bikes, boards and beaches

Throughout this itinerary we’ve selected small-scale, authentic accommodation with plenty of local charm and we have plenty of options to suit all the family.. By using small-scale hotels and guest-houses we reduce the impact on the environment compared with larger properties.

Meanwhile, in our offices in sunny Brighton we’re also trying to do our bit. We work hard to consciously recycle as much waste as possible. We’ve even managed to implement a system to ensure our food waste is composted instead of ending up in landfill. During your trip we encourage to recycle where possible, take all waste with you and provide lots of useful tips and hints in our Practical Information PDF provided by our local partners.

It is important to drink water when you are in hot countries to keep hydrated. There are various spots around Ubud and other areas in Bali where you can refill bottles instead of purchasing new plastic bottles all the time. We recommend our customers do this rather than wasting lots of plastic and we can help you find the areas to refill.

Our local partners in Indonesia are also on board with the need to recycle. They donate used paper to local people who make a living by collecting waste items.

We encourage the cycling trip through Ubud as an eco friendly way to get around and something the kids would enjoy! The guides are lots of fun and safety is of the utmost importance and each stop you make local villages will allow plenty of interaction with the local community.

In Candidasa you'll discover the taste of traditional Indonesian cuisine during a cookery class, something that is fun for all of the family you may find some secret cooks! The class is run by the local people and all the ingredients are grown in the local area, including tasty organic veggies.

Our local partners employ local staff and pay them a fare wage. They are offered training opportunities and decent working hours, plus familiarisation trips across the product we use so they really get to know it well. All of the guides and drivers are local and are made sure not to ever be working as a driver for longer than 10 hours in one day.

All of the transport we use in Bali is with private car and driver. The drivers that we use are all local so you will be directly supporting the local community.

In Indonesia we support a local project and give you the chance to make a small donation when you book with us. We are really proud to support a school fund for girls in east Bali set up by a Dutch couple in Seraya and you and the family will stay here during this trip. With the help of their guests, Els and Hans have set up the fund to provide secondary school scholarships for young girls from underprivileged families. On Bali, young boys are encouraged to continue their education after primary school but there’s often not enough money to send girls to school. Els and Hans are involved in the education of local girls and work together with the teachers to determine which girls are eligible for a scholarship.

In Ubud you will take a cycling tour through local villages where you can support local handicraft businesses. We support ethical handicrafts and in our Practical Information PDF we have information of what to look out for.

Also in our Practical Information PDF and Know Before You Go, we provide information of how to travel respectfully and the different cultures and religions that you may encounter. We have also provided a list of helpful phrases which always help with good relationships with local people and the community.

We book bed and breakfast basis in all hotels except in Seraya where there is nowhere else to eat in the area. This encourages our customers to eat at local restaurants where possible and we often can provide tips for the best places to find local food based on our experience of travelling in the area.

The surf school you will go to in Legian during the last few days of beach time in Sanur are a non profit surf school who offer help and opportunities to local children so you will be directly supporting this meaningful charity and sure it's something the kids can relate to too.
