Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Tanzania and Zanzibar holiday, the best of the south

The camps that we have selected for the itinerary are all small and intimate properties that aim to give back as much as they take. As a tour operator, we recommend camps and properties which operate responsibly to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on the care of the land and the people.

Lake Manze Camp has been constructed with careful regard to the impact it makes on the environment. The tents are are located in the midst of the surrounding thicket and from a boat, it is very difficult to even see the camp. The camp uses solar-heated panels for the showers and the products in the canvassed bathroom are sourced from local suppliers which support small surrounding communities.

Mdonya River Camp in Ruaha has been, and still is today, very committed to reduce their ecological footprint. Solar panels are the dominant source of electricity in camp, which also provide warm showers in each of the bathrooms. Around the camp, old fashioned candles and kerosene lanterns are the main source of light, which creates a rustic, earthy safari ambiance as well as being environmentally friendly.

The game drives in both of the parks are done in specialists safari vehicles, with experienced and knowledgeable guides. These guides are respectful of the environment and the animals it homes and as a result, they are always cautious of keeping a good distance from the wildlife. The camps in both of the parks also work together to ensure that the vehicle numbers are kept to a minimum around the game.

Finally in Zanzibar, Milele Villas, as an eco-resort, are dedicated to keeping the impact of the environment as low as possible. Some cornerstones of this eco concept are powering the resort 100% from solar energy and using harvested rain water for pools, showers and toilets. Milele Villas also harvest rain water which is used for showers and toilets, but as water is a precious commodity in Zanzibar, guests are reminded at all times to keep taps closed when they are not needed.

In the safari camps, both Lake Manze and Mdonya River Camp, give back to the local community. Education is a big part of that, where children from surrounding areas, together with the teachers, are shown around the camp to learn about the importance of utilizing the resources, the wildlife, and the structures that accommodate tourists. In Ruaha, a community project called “Mbompia” was established for the sole purpose of providing income for local communities, whilst maintaining the sustainable use of natural resources in the park.

Mdonya’s camp menu also reflects their social commitment, as ingredients are provided by the “Njombe Milk Farm” which is a successful community project that started with the support of an Italian NGO and an Italian-based milk factory. Mdonya supports the Kipera villagers’ economy (a village some kilometers outside Ruaha) buying, once a week, their fresh and dry good products.

In Milele Villas, the staff are local to the island and since working for Milele Villas, have learned first hand a great deal of new skills in the working environment, such as how to deal with situations and customer service from a tourism point of view. The staff are treated well, with the insurance of training and long-term work.
