Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka 14 day tour

Environment

Less than a third of the size of the UK, this tiny island packs a lot into its modest surface area, including no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage sites and one of the most diverse wildlife populations in Asia. Before departure, we ensure clients are well educated by giving them information about how to appropriately engage with the environment around them on their adventure to create as little negative impact as possible. We also inform travellers about the religion and customs that they should be aware of.The local guide will also help sustain this while on route.

We follow guidelines given by Travelife receiving a Travelife certified status and certificate of sustainability. These initiatives are based on leading international sustainability and CSR standards and guidelines which we incorporate into our business. This includes the EU Eco Management and Audit Scheme, EnvironmentalManagement, Global Reporting Initiative, tour operator supplement and more.

We also encourage visitors to participate in walks and bike rides to enjoy Sri Lanka vehicle free (due to its small size). This creates a more intimate experience and limits their contribution to pollution – opt for a short bike ride from Sigiriya to Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple rather than going by car.

As well as this, our environmental management system has been certified aligned with the international environmental quality standards. This is in relation to the requirements of ISO 14001:2015/ SLS ISO 14001:2015. We comply with 150 criteria related to an operators' office management, product range, international business partners and customer information. This includes the pre-departure information, in office paper and recycled matter, the use of ethical tour subjectivities i.e. animal abuse avoidance and local tour guide use, the alignment of sustainable and ethical partnerships such as Chimu Adventures and Viva expeditions. Ultimately our aim is to create an authentic and enjoyable trip without the expense of the environment and community.
Our offices also recycle papers with a certified agency as well as all glass/bulbs, plastic and segregated meals. As well as this, 60% of the office catches public transport to make personal efforts in minimizing our contribution to pollution.

Our business is also certified carbon neutral, playing our part in minimising carbon emissions and protecting the environment. In continuing this work we have received a voluntary cancellation certificate (2018) by the United Nations, cancelling 1,045 tonnes of CO2 gas in our operations. As a carbon neutral company, we apply this to all travel operations including on land transfers and company travels.

Community

As a Travlife partner our operation has been streamlined in accordance with the guidelines given by Travlife. Hence, we do work with local communities as much as possible in everywhere we can get the local support. We have developed excursions which are purely based on local community and the 100% of the are given back to enrich them and to ensure their culture is maintained. We want to continue these cultural, educational journeys.

There are plenty of opportunities to support the local economy, such as experiencing the town’s traditional fishing industry. Take the opportunity to dine at several local restaurants with dishes sourced fresh from the Negombo Lagoon. When visiting the fragrant spice garden in Matale, ask for a recommendation from your tour guide on good, local produce locations and merchants. Accommodation included in itineraries is handpicked and boutique/locally owned to further our purpose of ensuring money is placed back into the Sri Lanka economy to help with growth and support.

We also source local guides in each location who can give you an intimate understanding of the location and ensure that people are made aware of customs and educated on culture to maintain and respect the authenticity. Entertainment such as a live Kandyan dance performance is aimed at immersion and education and we do not support the objectification of culture.

We support many charities to give back to the community. Our supported charities include: 'MOTHER' charitable foundations, Voice foundation, SOS Children's Village, LRH Colombo and CSR Sri Lanka as well as organising voluntary donation programs towards schools, elderly homes and orphanages annually.

We encourage persons to educate themselves further by visiting the National Museum of Sri Lanka to support the government and local community. UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Polonnaruwa are visited of which we enjoy taking small groups to create a unique and personal experience and ensuring the encouragement to be respectful and follow the protocol of visiting parties to protect such wonders.

We encourage people to buy souvenirs but discourage the buying of endangered animal species products and/or items wrongfully taken from the environment i.e. shells. We also do not work with any animal showcasing for animal protection and in support against animal abuse. Aligned with our ‘travel kindly’ initiative, you can opt to look after an orphaned baby elephant at the Elephant Transit Centre in Udawalawe.
