Description of Road cycling holiday in Southern France

All routes are handpicked by local cycling experts on this week-long road cycling holiday in Southern France.

Taking you across three spectacular regions, you’ll cycle an average of 60 miles a day on Tour de France worthy roads, giving you plenty of opportunity to bask in the beautiful scenery from its golden corn fields and lush green vineyards backed by views of the Pyrenees to its legendary bastide villages, hill top towns and river gorges.

Your base in the Gorges d'Aveyron is a converted barn set amongst beautiful countryside where high energy breakfasts and seasonal, home-cooked evening meals with local Gaillac wines are served al fresco on the terrace, weather permitting, each day of your tour. All routes start and end here meaning you can concentrate on enjoying full days of cycling, with full service assistance available at any point if needed.

This terrain is ideal for keen cyclists and the regions mix of hills, valleys, gorges and plateaus, should provide something for everyone. All routes are amendable dependent on the level of challenge the group requires and we have of course incorporated the all important lunch and coffee stops so there is ample time to refuel on local specialties of the region and admire the spectacular vistas.

At the end of a day in the saddle you can retreat to the barn and take a sunset dip in the private pool during the warming months or wrap up and unwind on the terrace, soaking in the countryside views or enjoying a spot of stargazing before dinner.

Road cycling holiday in Southern France

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Our holidays are committed to promoting the use of cycling as a real method of sustainable transport where our Road and Leisure holidays enable our guests to explore as far as a 40 mile radius, taking in the Tarn, the Tarn et Garonne and Aveyron and truly demonstrating the beauty and very best of the region can be experienced by bike.

Each day our hand designed routes provide plenty of opportunity to visit and actively participate in everything the region has to offer. Here your Road cycling tour tour begins with a visit to Penne, the stunning castle overlooking the gorge of the well known Saint Antonin-noble-val, a bustling market town which is not only the location of your refreshing end of day drink, but also one of the markets from which we source our food.

This includes local cheese such as Le Pic, a goats cheese supplier merely a few minutes from the market, eggs from chickens just a few steps from our door or fruit and vegetables supplied by the farmers and fields that you encounter as you cycle.

This type of slow grown food helps to reduce our carbon footprint and bring top quality taste and seasonality to our menus, which come as three courses every night of your holiday. This can include dishes such as asparagus wrapped in Aveyron ham, beef tomatoes served with Toulouse sausage and caper dressing or warm goats cheese salad, dressed in walnuts and honey. We complement the meals we provide and cook on site with full bodied wine from the Gaillac region; producers of red, rose, white and delicate sparkling wines and whose vineyards form a key component of this holiday , which you will not only see by eye but will also have the opportunity to experience on route or on rest day.

Our approach to catering is complete, when we ensure we compost any food waste produced by preparing these dishes. We ask that our guests take responsibility for this too by composting and recycling whilst staying in La Grange; your en-suite accommodation for the week.

We believe these small gestures make a difference environmentally, which is why we provide chilled tap water for guests and can also supply Bidons for your road bike rather than small disposable bottles. Furthermore, by collecting rain water from the rooves of our accommodation, we can maintain our site in an efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Our small group of four, run your holiday all from one base - something we value so that our guests can explore without having to move their belongings from place to place and helping to ensure reduce our use of non sustainable transport methods. Your road routes also go directly to and from base, so you really do experience you whole of your holiday on the bike with little environmental impact.

This concept is also why we promote arriving to us by train which although rural, has access and links to the major train hubs such as Toulouse, Albi and Montauban.

France is a wonderful country that takes life slowly, so it makes sense that one of the best ways to see it is on two wheels as it not only provides the chance to take in your surroundings with little environmental impact but also to meet the people Living and working in the region.
Living and working here ourselves means that for all our holidays, guided or non- guided, the knowledge we have gained from our friends and neighbours we incorporate into your tour and ensures our guests and the region can benefit.
Here your holiday embraces the stunning villages of the region that although have not changed visually in hundreds of years, now rely on tourism rather than farming. These villages provide the locations to your alfresco coffee and lunch stops, where you might sip a coffee opposite the imposing castle of Najac or take the three course ‘menu de jour’ with a stunning view of St Cirq lepopie ; they not only offer unique charm and character but a chance for you to actively participate and contribute to the local economy.
During your stay in this beautiful region we aim to create mutually beneficial relationship between those living in the region and our guests , all the while increasing awareness for the vast array of wildlife that is accessible from our doorstep. Cuckoo’s, woodpeckers, buzzards and deer can all be seen from our cycling base, or further a field as you cycle along the Aveyron river.

Overall, we hope that through our tours we can:

Showcase the natural landscape and sights of the Tarn with little environmental impact, enable our guests to engage with local history, traditions, culture and cuisine and encourage interaction and contribution to the local economy so that ultimately all of this combines to create an engaging and informative holiday to remember.
