Tailor made holidays to Peru

Description of Tailor made holidays to Peru

Do you dream about visiting Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley but want to do it in a different way to everyone else? This itinerary is all about taking you off the beaten track and away from the crowds as you make your way from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Visit remote highland villages and important archaeological sites where hardly anyone else goes as you choose from a daily menu of cultural and hiking activities, whilst spending each night at a comfortable mountain lodge.

The second half of the trip is spent at the Inkaterra Field Station in Peru’s Southern Amazon, where you’ll be given a more hand’s on experience of the rainforest, learning about the research and conservation work that goes on here and visiting local community projects to see how Inkaterra is working with indigenous communities to protect and preserve the Amazon.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Tailor made holidays to Peru

Environment

While we’re aware that selling holidays to South America which involve long distance as well as short haul flights inevitably has an impact on the environment we endeavor to reduce our impact in other ways. As much as possible we try to be a paper free business, which means that all of our clients are sent their documents electronically and we ask our suppliers to cut down on the material they give us – for example we ask that marketing information be sent electronically or accessed online to reduce unnecessary waste.

In our Before you go travel documents that we send out to all of our clients before they travel, we ask clients to use refillable water stations and the water canteens provided by the properties to avoid producing plastic waste on their trip. We also encourage our clients to be more environmentally conscious travellers, asking them to consider the scarcity of resources and infrastructure in some of the areas that they’re travelling to. By promoting two local suppliers that are heavily involved in conservation projects and are committed to environmental responsibility, Mountain Lodges and Inkaterra, we also know that their guides will reinforce this message locally.

One of the big concerns in Lima, Cusco and the Sacred Valley is the quantity of vehicles on the road, which results in lengthy traffic jams getting into and out of each area and more pollution. In an effort to combat this, in this itinerary all of the tours are done on a shared group basis with shared vehicles throughout.

Community

We are firmly of the belief that the best travel experiences come through interaction with local people and learning about their culture and traditions. That is why we promote experiences like the Lares Adventure to Machu Picchu, which involves local indigenous communities in its operations, not only to provide opportunities for employment, training and development for local villagers but also to provide them with the opportunity to share their customs and traditions with guests. The format of the Lares Adventure, which takes guests off the beaten track to visit more remote archaeological sites and Andean communities, at the same time providing opportunities to buy souvenirs from local craft makers and artisans, is effective in helping to spread tourist income more widely across the region and to those in need.

We are committed to seeing more tourism revenue remain in the areas that our clients visit so through our local ground handlers in Peru we make a donation per traveller to their Plan Wallata program. This is a five-year plan that has been developed to manage and preserve Ollantaytambo as a sustainable tourism destination and support important community development projects.

Finally, we provide all of our clients with a comprehensive before you go document prior to travel that addresses cultural differences they may encounter on their trip to help promote understanding and good relationships with local people as they’re travelling. In the same documents we also recommend that clients travel with local currency, especially when travelling to rural areas, to allow them to buy better-quality souvenirs from local artisans rather than mass-produced items from the big tourist markets.
