Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Peru family adventure tour

Wherever possible we prioritise accommodation with low environmental impact. In Peru we mainly book small-scale, low key accommodation options for our clients that are locally run. Mainly clients will stay in Pousada's which are historical buildings that have been restored to sustain tourism.

On this trip you'll also get the chance to visit the Colca Canyon. We operate this as a small group tour, ensuring that we use minibuses rather than private transfers, making the environmental impact smaller.

Hiking in Peru is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and the shortened Inca Trail that you'll take part in on this trip, is a great way to do this with the family.

We use local guides on our excursions. We think this is important as they really know the history of the place and have a passion for it. It also means less migration of workers to larger cities for work, reducing how far they travel therefore reducing carbon emissions and the over development of main cities.

In our office in Brighton we work hard to recycle as much as we possibly can. We even buy our paper off the same company we recycled it with resulting in a closed loop system. As we provide our staff with a healthy lunch every day, we also collect our food waste for compost so that it doesn’t end up in the land fill. We’re committed to sustainable travel and are proud to have received the thumbs up from Travelife by achieving their Better Places Partner criteria.

We offer each and every one of our customer the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions, whether they book their international flights with us or not. On top of this, we also provide each of our customers with a 'How to be a Responsible Traveller' document before they travel. This includes advice and tips on how to buy locally, protect wildlife, and how to make a genuine difference to the country they’re visiting.

With this itinerary you stay with a local family in the Colca Canyon, helping them on their farm the following morning. This supports more rural communities both financially and with a bit of hard graft!

You also visit Lake Titicaca you will have the opportunity to sample the local way of life, purchase crafts, try local dishes and your money will go direct to supporting this traditional community.

Our local partners actively participate in donation campaigns to send clothes or foodstuff to different provinces in the country, such as the highest cities in Puno and Cusco. They have worked on community based charity projects such as collecting 475kg of plastic lids, to get wheelchairs for a local Church.

In Peru we give our customers the opportunity to donate to a local project. Project Peru is a small, lively, totally voluntary UK-based charity. They offer food, clothes, shelter, education, healthcare and fun to those who live in their children’s refuge in the desert shanty towns of Lima.

We work with registered providers of the Inca Trail, supporting the porters and guides, offering fair wages and job security. Using experienced guides they educate on the responsible ways to trek, clear up after yourself and look after the surroundings on what is now a very busy and popular trek.

Hotels are locally run and owned, with clear sustainable practices, this means you will be supporting the local communities and not staying in chain hotels that impact on utilities for locals such as water and do not adhere to quotas, which in certain areas is limited in supply for all to use.
