Responsible tourism: South Africa In a Nutshell

During your travels you'll get to stay in smaller, locally owned accommodations all of whom do their bit to reduce their impact on the environment where possible. Some of our guest houses, such as our lodge in Addo village, use purely natural local materials in the building of their rooms and common areas. Not only do you get an authentic experience of staying in traditional mud huts, you can also know that there are no foreign materials impacting on the environment.

Ensuring the environment is protected for the future and for our own well-being is just so important both to us and our local partners in South Africa. Recycling paper and office waste is a big part of that. Here in the UK we do our utmost to recycle as much as possible and our local partners in South Africa do likewise.

We use only recycled paper and our local partners support a tree planting project called the Greenpop project. So, not only do we recycle paper and use recycled paper in our offices, but we also support reforestation projects.

We always suggest to our customers that carbon offsetting is good way to give back to the environment given the air-miles it takes to get to South Africa.

Both here in Brighton and in the offices of our local partners, we do our best to conserve energy, making sure that computers and lights are switched off when not in use.

During our holidays we ensure that you will always have that very important meal of the day, breakfast, included in your stay. This does mean though that we encourage our travellers to head out to local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes to enjoy the local fare for lunches and dinner.

On this particular holiday you'll get to actually head out with our local partners who run the local project we support in the Knysna Townships. You'll get a taster of what real life is in the township and know that just by being there you're supporting a project that is a force for good within that community. There are many ways our local partner here does this: they run a soup kitchen, provide a safe house for abused women and children and provide tuition and clothes for primary school children.

During this particular holiday you'll get to stay with a local farmer on their guest farm where you'll probably get to enjoy the best meal of your holiday. Local farmers along the Garden Route can no longer support themselves solely through farming, and by staying here you're helping support local families sustain their livelihoods and that of their employees.
