Responsible tourism: South Africa self drive tour, off the beaten track

During your travels across South Africa you'll get to stay in small and sometimes quirky guest houses and lodges. Each of the accommodation choices are made because they share our passion and commitment to do all possible to prevent further environmental damage and rather seek to restore the environment. For example, during your safari trip you'll stay in tented camps where you are encouraged to keep to the pathways and boardwalks to minimise the impact on the vegetation.

Water is very important too. Guests are always encouraged to minimise their impact on water resources by not having fresh towels every day if possible to save water from doing many loads of laundry.

Where possible, we also choose to work with accommodations that utilise local materials and traditional building techniques which minimise impact on the local environment. Your lodge while on safari in the Greater Kruger is heavily involved in ensuring that visitors and the local community are aware of their impact on the environment and how best to protect it.

During your travels you'll get to head out on safari and wildlife conservation and protection is an important issue to be aware of. We include trips to game reserves where you'll be suitable safari vehicles in a small group, thus lowering the impact of vehicles on the immediate environment. The reserves you will visit are dedicate to protecting the wildlife under their guardianship. Our game reserve in the Greater Kruger, for example, believe in making sure that the local community and their guides have the necessary education and access to eco-training meaning that while you're out on safari you can rest assured that your presence in their environment has as little impact on the animals as possible. Plus you get to have the most amazing experience and plenty of great knowledge and information on the animals, birdlife and environment.

Your holiday through South Africa is going to be a self-drive holiday, the best way to explore this incredible country. It's really important that the cars you drive meet our own values. We work with reputable car rental companies in South Africa who hold the same values as ourselves to leave as small a print as possible on the environment. They are committed to meeting international standards of providing low carbon vehicles and to going above and beyond these standards.

Recycling paper and office waste is a big part of what we do to seek to protect the environment for future generations and for our own well-being today. Both ourselves here in the UK and our local partners in South Africa seek to recycle and use recycled materials as much as possible.

In South Africa, our local partners support a reforestation initiative called the Greenpop project. So, not only do we recycle paper and use recycled paper in our offices, but we also support reforestation projects.

In our offices we do our very best to conserve energy where possible, making sure that computers and lights are switched off when not in use.

We always suggest to our customers that carbon offsetting is good way to give back to the environment given the air-miles it takes to get to South Africa.

Both here in Brighton and in the offices of our local partners, we do our best to conserve energy, making sure that computers and lights are switched off when not in use.

Supporting local businesses is an important part of who we are and it is particularly important to us that we support local businesses in South Africa. We work with a local partner in Cape Town who train up and employ from within their community.

Our local partners also support some incredible initiatives, one of which is the Original T Bag design company. This initiative collect used tea bags from local businesses, sells the empty bags to folks in the local community and provide a space and tools for those designers to create. You'll find anything and everything from greeting cards, to handbags, to coasters in their shop. This initiative encourages positive upliftment within the local community.

As part of our ideals of supporting local people, we always choose to work with local excursion companies within each area visited. This means that any guided trip taken during this holiday will be directly supporting local families and individuals.

Your lodge in the greater Kruger Area helps support the local community by providing training in the hospitality industry so that they have the necessary skills to gain employment.

There is a local project that we support in South Africa, located on the Garden Route which is set up to support the township community in Knysna. With every booking we encourage our travellers to help us support this project and its incredible work in providing a safe house for abused women and children, clothing and tuition for primary school children and they run a soup kitchen too.
