Description of Iceland photography workshop

Iceland is paradise for photographers, and this Iceland photography workshop explores and captures the land of fire and ice, under the guidance and tuition of National Geographic photographer Tyrone Turner. Active volcanoes, thundering waterfalls, wild horses and pretty fishing villages are all waiting to be photographed.

This eight day trip includes day long photography workshops which take place on exciting excursions around the island. The holiday begins in the south, where many of Iceland’s photography highlights are clustered, and you’ll also have the chance to relax and swim at the world famous Blue Lagoon.

Next, we’ll travel around the striking coast, visiting the magnificent waterfall Seljalandsfoss, before moving on to the eastern region for a boat ride on the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This formed relatively recently, after glacial ice melted to create a huge pool, and it’s the place to go for prime glacier photographs.

National Geographic photographer Tyrone Turner will be your guide throughout this eight day trip. Under his tuition, you can improve your photography skills, taking mostly landscape images but also trying some still lives of the island’s animals. You’ll be able to experiment with different light levels at different times of the day, too, including sunrise and at night, when there’s also the possibility of capturing the aurora borealis. This is a small group trip, and thanks to the cosy number of participants, you are guaranteed personal attention from Tyrone and hands on tutoring. It means this workshop suits photographers of all levels.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Iceland photography workshop

Environment

We believe in the power of photography; the power to create incredible experiences, and the power to make a positive impact. That’s why we founded our own Trust, a non-profit organisation that uses photography to make a positive impact on both a social and conservation level. We finance the running costs of the Trust, so by just by joining one of our workshops, you're indirectly contributing. (So all you have to do to make a difference is have the photo adventure of a lifetime!) Through this Trust, we provide free professional photography to charities doing environmental and conservation work; images they can use for fundraising and communication purposes.

Environmental policy:
For this trip, we work with a local partner that shares our commitment to sustainable tourism. We have been dedicated to operating in as sustainable way as possible since the very beginning. We continually search for new ways in which we can improve our performance, strengthening our connection to the environments, communities and economies in which we operate. We are passionate about wilderness and wild places and the range of adventures that are available throughout Iceland. We have a genuine enthusiasm to share the landscapes, flora, fauna, saga and  tails of our land with our clients. We greatly value these assets and are absolutely committed to operating in a manner which conserves and enhances our natural environment. Through the provision of engaging experiences from wilderness to wildlife, we are firmly of the view that positive tourism experiences have the capacity to foster a strong connection with the natural world and promote more sustainable living.

Waste Management:
During this trip, we recycle plastics, metals, paper, cartons and organic wastes and every week we empty our bins to the Akureyri recycle centre. That is always our aim to try and be as environmentally friendly as possible. We encourage our guests to reuse plastic bottles, limit food waste and not to leave any traces of your being there, e.g. trash in nature.

At our office in Cape Town, we recycle, compost, and minimise the use of paper by predominantly working with digital files.

Accommodation:
We use hotels and guesthouses that operate according to the same environmental standards we do.

Carbon Footprint Compensation:
To compensate for our carbon footprint, we sponsor a tree for each participant, which is planted by Greenpop in their reforestation or urban greening programs in Southern Africa. We'll give you a ‘tree ring,’ a key ring that has the coordinates of their tree, so that you know exactly where it’s growing.

Community

Apart from supporting conservation initiatives through our photography, we also support social nonprofits. We provide free professional photography to charities that do valuable work and can use the images for fundraising purposes.

Through our Trust, we also run PhotoVoice workshops for youth in underprivileged South African communities. We identify talented young individuals with an interest in and talent for photography, and provide workshops where we encourage them to tell their stories, and the stories of their communities, through photography. We teach them creative self-expression, and the power visual images can have. Participants are encouraged to raise awareness about issues that matter most to them, which stimulates positive activism.

Portrait Photography:
We operate according to the Privacy Laws; the right to privacy does not allow you to photograph locals without their permission. Photographing locals where their face will be recognizable is prohibited without getting a full consent from the person in matter.

Supporting the Local Economy:
We are absolutely committed to engaging local businesses throughout our trips and ensuring that the economic benefits are distributed in this equitable way.  As well as providing a great service to our clients, by working with local partners it also means that our groups always receive a warm welcome from the locals wherever we go.
