Description of Laos Photography holiday, Luang Prabang

Head to Laos for a photography holiday in the ancient town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Luang Prabang, in the north of the country, is thought of by many as one of Southeast Asiaís most beautiful places. Found where the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers meet, itís the hub of Laotian culture, and home to a staggering 33 wats (temples). There are so many photography opportunities here, from river sunsets, nearby caves and waterfalls and a busy night market, to the morning alms giving procession performed by Buddhist monks. The detailed itinerary below has full details of what is covered during this holiday.

Included in this holiday is single occupancy accommodation in a traditional hotel in central Luang Prabang for four nights, with breakfast. Transfers to and from the hotel all transport throughout the holiday, for day trips and the support and guidance of two professional photographers from the UK, Matt and Andreea, with instruction, reviews and feedback.

Every day, Matt and Andreea offer individual and group advice, which is tailored specifically to the needs of the group (a pre-trip consultation helps establish what level everyone is at and where their interests lie). In addition, Matt and Andreea also offer workshops or individual sessions to learn about techniques or using specific equipment. These are brief, typically on location, and relevant to whatever is the focus of photography for that day.

This holiday caters for all levels and experience, and thereís as much tuition as you want, with all sessions completely optional. Matt and Andreea are on hand throughout the day, too, for ad hoc advice and help.

The hotel we stay at is in a peaceful location in Luang Prabang, away from the crowds yet within walking distance of everything, with a view overlooking Nam Khan River. There is no single supplement Ė the price is based on solo occupancy of each room. Local taxes and fees are all included, with no hidden extras.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Laos Photography holiday, Luang Prabang

We only run a couple of photography tours each year and we have a maximum group size of 10, thus keeping the environmental impact of international flights to a minimum. We donít include international flights in our package (other than, if required, local ones between tour locations) to allow participants all over the world to make the best and most cost and environmentally effective travel arrangements for themselves (e.g. combining with other trips planned in the same area).
Our Laos trip takes place in UNESCO-protected Luang Prabang, a town rich in local and social enterprises and craft markets. We include accommodation, shopping and sightseeing activities in our tour that actively contribute to supporting these.
As photographers of many genres including wildlife, we only work with whatís presented to us and we highly discourage any intrusive interaction with animals to provoke a reaction, which we consider an unethical and unfair practice. We guide our students to adopt the same policy.

This entire trip is scheduled with the local community benefit in mind, and all attractions and events that we will visit and photograph are supporting the local community through fees or donations, which we include in the price of our trip. We have experience of these locations and we will advise our participants in relation to dos and don'ts to ensure everyone maintains respect and decorum while interacting with locals especially around religious locations and rituals.
We purchase our gifts and souvenirs from family businesses, local markets as well as organised local charities promoting welfare of local residents and we never haggle! While doing so, we are very mindful not to inadvertently encourage child labour, as we believe all children should be in schools, not selling on the streets, as hard as the realities on the ground may be. We encourage our photography tour participants to adopt the same practices. This is embedded in our tour structure where we aim to stay and eat local, visit local markets
