Description of Angkor Wat and Luang Prabang Photography Holiday

Travel to beautiful Cambodia and Laos in May 2018 on this 10 day small group photography holiday, with tuition and support from experienced photographers. Spend time in Siem Reap, close to the magical temple complex of Angkor Wat and then move on to ancient Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the north of Laos.

The tour begins in Siem Reap which, thanks to its proximity to Angkor, is a must-see destination in Cambodia. You will of course have ample opportunity to photograph the temples here, but there will be plenty of time to also see and photograph local life and culture, with the chance to try some lively street and reportage photography.

From Siem Reap we move to Luang Prabang in northern Laos. This old town is one of the most beautiful places in South East Asia, sitting where the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers meet. This is the beating heart of Laos and cradle of its culture, and there are an astonishing 33 temples here, too. The morning procession of Buddhist monks gathering alms, the lively night markets, colour-rich river sunsets, waterfalls and fishing villages in the countryside nearby all make exciting subjects for photography.

Your tutors and guides are experienced UK photographers Matt and Andreea. Pre trip consultations and time getting to know everyone on day one will help them tailor their guidance to the needs and interests of the group. Throughout the trip, they will offer group advice and also hold short workshops and one to one sessions, teaching techniques and explaining how best to use equipment. These take place mostly on location, so you get the most from your time in Siem Reap and Luang Prabang, and sessions will be concise and relevant to the day’s shooting opportunities.

Anyone joining this photography adventure should be reassured that this is a holiday, not a boot camp! You can have as much or as little tuition and advice from the tour leaders as you want. All levels of experience are catered for and all workshops and feedback sessions are completely optional. Matt and Andreea are always around to help with shots and camera throughout each day, except during any free time. Feel free to ask them for help when it suits, or you can schedule in an individual session for a more focussed opportunity to review your work or get some tips.

This tour runs from 11th to 20th May 2018. The itinerary below has day by day details so you can discover exactly what’s covered on this tour. Throughout this photography holiday you will stay in excellent hotels close to all the restaurants and attractions in each location. Accommodation is single occupancy and is included in the trip price. All breakfasts, internal travel including day trips and the flight between Siem Reap and Luang Prabang are also included in the cost, plus all meals as specified, entry costs to attractions and unlimited photography tuition.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Angkor Wat and Luang Prabang Photography Holiday

We only run a couple of photography tours each year and we have a maximum group size of 10, thus keeping the environmental impact of international flights to a minimum. We don’t include flights in our package to allow participants all over the world to make the best and most cost and environmentally effective travel arrangements for themselves (e.g. combining with other trips planned in the same area).
Our Cambodia (Siem Reap) trip has visiting the Angkor sites at the core, which is ticketed for access, and we include these fees in our tour price, thus contributing to their preservation and maintenance.
Our Laos trip takes place in UNESCO-protected Luang Prabang, a town rich in local and social enterprises and craft markets. We include accommodation, shopping and sightseeing activities in our tour that actively contribute to supporting these.
As photographers of many genres including wildlife, we only work with what’s presented to us and we highly discourage any intrusive interaction with animals to provoke a reaction, which we consider an unethical and unfair practice. We guide our students to adopt the same policy.

We purchase our gifts and souvenirs from family businesses, local markets as well as organised local charities promoting welfare of local residents and we never haggle! While doing so, we are very mindful not to inadvertently encourage child labour, as we believe all children should be in schools, not selling on the streets, as hard as the realities on the ground may be. We encourage our photography tour participants to adopt the same practices. This is embedded in our tour structure where we aim to stay and eat local, visit local markets and stay in family-run accommodation.
We actively encourage staying, eating and shopping local, and not using international chains, and we arrange all accommodation, travel and meals accordingly and directly at source inasmuch as possible, to maximise value for both our customers and local providers.
While encouraging our customers to be creative and always seek new points of view and ways of creating images, we actively discourage practicing photography that is too intrusive to either people, nature and wildlife, or which depicts social situations in a way that is derogative, insensitive or offensive.
Our trips are scheduled with the local community benefit in mind, and all attractions and events that we will visit and photograph are supporting the local community through fees or donations, which we include in the price of our trip. We have experience of these locations and we will advise our participants in relation to dos and don'ts to ensure everyone maintains respect and decorum while interacting with locals especially around religious locations and rituals.
