Description of Boxing day holiday in Finnish Lapland

This Boxing Day winter holiday in Finnish Lapland is a five day, small group holiday that is perfect for those who don’t want the fun of Christmas to be over just because the calendar has a big gap all the way through to New Year’s Eve. No sluggish, sofa slouching here, as the invigorating, idyllic landscapes of Finnish Lapland cast their magic spell on ‘Betwixmas’ in this white wilderness of Torassieppi, on the outskirts of Pallas Ylläs National Park.

This carefully crafted itinerary is for people who want to get out into the winter wilderness, starting with a very cool opener, spending the first night of your holiday in a snow hotel. This is rebuilt with the season using snow and ice, and is the most magical place to stay, with snow sculptures and ice carving as décor, a candlelit ice restaurant and a snow bedroom with expedition sleeping bags.

Your winter adventure continues at a reindeer farm in Torassieppi where you will stay in charming cottages on a family farm that dates back to 1847. It is the perfect base for snow shoeing, husky sledding and a snowmobile safari, as well as spending time with the reindeer of course. These three days of activities include a traditional Finnish cookery lesson too.

We also hope very much that our guests will get to see the Northern Lights and we will spend one evening in the outdoors, around a campfire, and another taking a snowshoeing trip into a remote spot to see if the Aurora Borealis does her beautiful thing. Your guide will take you to a prime viewpoint based on local weather conditions to up your chances of seeing them.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Boxing day holiday in Finnish Lapland

Our holidays rely on visiting beautiful and un-spoilt areas, and they don’t come much more un-spoilt than Torassieppi. Naturally, we wish to maintain the natural settings in which we work, not just for the future of our company, but also for future generations. We will always insist that our local providers are equally conscious of this need.

Torassieppi Farm and Winter Village is situated 150 Kilometres north of the Arctic Circle but is only 40 minutes from Kittila Airport. When planning and creating new activities and itineraries the most environmentally friendly transport methods are always considered and we use the smallest vehicle possible for each transfer, therefore, minimising pollution from larger vehicles wherever possible. Journeys for airport transfers or activities are also always combined to reduce the number of journeys for each itinerary.

The ethos at Torassieppi is about bringing you close to the natural environment. Torassieppi is located in the wilderness area of Finland, beside the Pallas Yllas National Park, and on the edge of the Torasjarvi Lake so offers a picturesque wilderness destination. Our local partner’s guides advise and teach the guests how to observe and photograph local wildlife without impacting on its behaviour or natural habitat. Guides practice ‘Leave No Trace’ principles on the trail. Guests also stay overnight at Lainio Snow Village, which is built entirely from ice and snow, utilising earth’s natural resources and creating a hotel that has minimal negative impact on the environment. Guests are advised on how to stay here with care, and the phenomenal and unique memories that they leave with make for true appreciation of Finland’s climate and landscape.

Many of the activities included in this itinerary are eco-friendly and utilise completely natural resources, such as snowshoes, cross country skis and husky sledding. Plus, we know that the huskies are well taken care of at the Arctic Sled Dog Centre, receiving a yearly annual inspection and visiting the vets regularly.

The centre follows all necessary, legal guidelines and their welfare is the utmost priority there. As the largest and most well-known husky centre in Finland, this is absolutely imperative!

The Torassieppi Farm and Winter Village has been employing the local community for many years. In this manner, we help to maintain jobs in an area where unemployment was, until recently, very high. The use of small hotels and businesses means that the tourism income, generated by our presence stays where it should, in the local economy. We firmly believe in paying a fair price for all the services provided by our suppliers regardless of where they are in the world.

The food at Torassieppi is focused on organic and locally sourced produce and ingredients wherever possible. In remote regions such as this, sustainability is key so we are thrilled they are really trying to showcase local produce.
The use of local suppliers ensures that the tourism spend filters through to local economies via the tourism multiplier effect. Our local partners are passionate about the places we visit. They are committed to designing and operating our holidays in such a way to ensure we maximise the positive effects of tourism on the local economies, cultures and the environment whilst minimising any negative impacts.
