Description of Three Gorges cycling tour in China

Cycling China’s Three Gorges route is not for novice cyclists however, if you’ve got the right level of experience and a certain sense of adventure, you’ll find this three week small group tour is certain to get you clicking through the gears in readiness for what lies ahead.

From the very start you’ll be treated to a combination of ‘must see’ sights in the capital, Beijing, including the Great Wall, before boarding a sleeper train to Xi’an for cycling amongst more mountainous terrain around Mount Hua and the Quinling range in China’s hinterland.

This is a side to China that casual tourists rarely get to glimpse which is why we, as tour operators, have designed this original route to ensure our small groups have an authentic and unique experience with as much time on our bikes as possible.

As we transfer your luggage from one locally owned hotel or guesthouse to the next, as well as providing a support vehicle as back up, you can rest assured that cycling takes centre stage with paved roads over stunning mountain passes providing further incentives to achieve tough ascents.

Typical days feature cycling in the morning, sometimes distances longer than 100km, before being free in the afternoon to explore local towns and villages in the company of a local guide or at your leisure. This is a great way to experience the incredibly impressive landscapes of central China from a unique perspective before interacting with local people and experiencing cultural customs and regional contrasts at ground level.

The tour as a whole incorporates more than 1000kms spent in the saddle with everywhere from the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China to the Terracotta Warriors and the Yangzi River’s Three Gorges, offering an incredible array of adventures to satisfy the body as well as the mind and soul.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
Since 2010, we are proud to be CSR-certified by TourCert – a certification which demands constant improvement on corporate responsibility issues which we work hard to fulfil.

During this trip, we aim to minimise transfer by car and cover all possible distances by bicycle and foot. This will keep emmissions at a minimum while giving our participants the whole picture of China's urban, suburban and rural culture. We completely avoid domestic flights and travel from Beijing to Xi'an and from Yichang to Shanghai by train.

Our tour guides are instructed to reduce waste by preferring regionally produced fruit from the market over heavily packaged goods from the supermarket. Participants as well as drivers will be advised to follow this example and use only public wastebins for disposal.

We are careful not to leave any traces of garbage or harmed plants at any place we vistit, keeping the landscape as beautiful and clean (or even cleaner) as we find it.

The Impacts of this Trip

To support local businesses and keep in close touch with the local culture, we select small and family enterprises as partners for our tours.

In Beijing, for example, we stay at the Lüsongyuan - a small hotel in a traditional Chinese courtyard located in the heart of the hutongs North of the Forbidden City. For many years we have established and fostered good and friendly ties to managers and staff of this hotel who are employed to fair conditions.

We support local structures as much as we can, employing drivers native to the places we visit who work at standard to above standard market conditions.

For food, we advise our guides to choose restaurants which serve regional dishes and buy local produce such as fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

Respect for the regional culture is one of our core concerns. Our tour guides have acquired deep knowledge of the Chinese everyday-culture and customs and will share their knowledge with the group to raise awareness and respect among towards the foreign culture. If requested by the group, the tour guide will help the participants to learn useful phrases in Chinese to enable them to engage with the locals indipendently.
