Description of Highlights of Sicily holiday for over 50s

This Sicily holiday starts in Catania, a perfect location to gain a sense of what we have in store for you on this island itinerary. Just imagine its colourful streets and vivid atmosphere, no matter what the time of year. Enjoy a guided tour of the city, learning its history and gaining a great introduction to its gastronomic highlights too.

Food plays an important part of any Sicilian holiday which is why we include a cookery lesson with a professional chef, who will teach you Italian while showing you how to cook fresh vegetables or fish that you have bought together.

This Sicily holiday also includes a trip to Mount Etna, Europe’s most famous active volcano and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have specifically designed this day for you, an easy trek on its slopes, followed by a wine tasting, produced from the grapes that grow on the same slopes.

You transfer to the Siracusa for the second half of your holiday, in the south of the island. Here you will experience two cultural gems, both declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002: Siracusa with its historic centre Ortigia and then Noto. Siracusa is a fascinating place with narrow streets, delicious street food and sea-scented air. Noto is a baroque city, famous for the highest quality of almonds and a wonderful place to taste and buy its most famous produce, in the form of sweets and marzipan.

To bring this wonderful travel experience to a close, we recommend a relaxing day in the countryside, tasting the region’s authentic olive oil and learning all the secrets behind this precious ingredient of the Italian cuisine.

During this holiday we recommend two different places to stay, one in Catania and the other in the Siracusa region. We choose our accommodations very carefully, according to your needs and interests and you will have six nights on a bed and breakfast basis in Catania, followed by five nights in Siracusa. Our accommodations are in the town centres, so that you have ease of access to shops, sites and restaurants. You will be accompanied by a local guide throughout the trip, who is an expert in all of the local details and delights not featured in the usual travel guides.

The price of this holiday includes: accommodation, all breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 street lunches, 2 aperitifs, three guided trips, four daily experiences including transport, local guide, airport transfers, health and baggage insurance.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Our aim is to make our Travel Experiences sustainable for the long term: we know that tourism can have both an exceptionally positive and potentially negative impact on local communities. For this reason, we promote responsible travel that means: to respect and benefit local people, their cultures, economy and the environment.

We start from the beginning, helping our travellers to choose their customized daily experiences based on these sustainable categories:
- Green
- Hand-made
- Eat local
- Live local
- Sport
- Adrenaline

For this trip we minimised carbon emissions making the following considerations:

- LOCAL SERVICES - We choose local suppliers which had adopted sustainable practices. The historical shipyard of Acitrezza, for instance, beside trying to preserve old tradition, is aimed to save the marine ecosystem which surround the villages. In fact, due to the pollution and the overfishing of the past, the sea is poorer of marine species. For this reason, we chose only local suppliers which could offer eco-tours with traditional boats or electric ones.

- WATER CONSERVATION - We support initiatives that encourage conservative use of water (like refilling water bottles or turning off water when brushing teeth). For this purpose, we kindly ask to our travellers to read the Responsible Travel Conduct what we will send before departing for Sicily, which is a region that has been suffering periodically of drought (especially in summer season)

- LOCAL FOOD AND GOODS - We include and strongly inspire our travellers to eat locally produced food and goods (like organic food, natural local products which come straight from the garden to the kitchen), like during the wandering in Catania. In each destination we chose local and authentic places, like fresh markets, where is possible to taste local food, usually from who produced it. During the wandering in Catania, we have a stop in the fish market where the traveller could taste what it was fished early in the morning.

- WATER BOTTLES - We encourage our travellers to refill a water bottle from water 'bubblers' where available to avoid unnecessary purchasing of bottled water and the subsequent waste disposal issues

- RECYCLING – Our Local guides also provide travellers with awareness on how they can reduce and recycle in Sicily

- PUBLIC AND ECOLOGICAL TRANSPORT – Since we have a high range of biking tours in our offered experiences, we strongly encourage our travellers to choose ecological transportation like bicycle during their free time, especially in the area nearby Siracusa since there is the outstanding Natural Reserve of Vendicari

- NATURAL PARK AND NATURAL RESERVE – We included in this travel experience the Etna National Park, where there is one of the most famous and active volcano in Europe. The high value of this Park is not only for the active caldera but for the wildlife that live here as well (like spectacular birds of prey, such as peregrines and golden eagles). According to the season, is possible to visit the Natural Reserve of the Lachea Island and Cyclopean Isles too (established in 1998), important for the flora and fauna species which belong to this environment. If summer time, we could organize a daily experience during the free time in the Marine Reserve of Plemmirio, established in 2005 for its 2,500 hectares of salt water and beautiful emerald green seabed’s, which have given back many amphorae, planking, shipwrecks and other archaeological finds

The Impacts of this Trip

This Travel Experience is planned to ensure that we support local communities by:

- PROMOTING UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES – We strongly believe in the development of community participation process in the management and sustainable conservation of World Heritage sites. For this reason we promote our partnership with local vendors that organize activities in the UNESCO sites, respecting these special and unique environments. For this Travel Experience, we chose the Etna National Park, UNESCO site since 2013, the city of Siracusa and its old center (UNESCO site from 2005 ) and Noto (from 2002)

- SMALLER-SCALE LOCALLY-OWNED ACCOMMODATION – Choosing local B&Bs, like the ones of this trip both in Catania and Siracusa. Located both in the old centres of the cities, all bright and near all the facilities, they could be the best starting point to live the travel experience as a local. Thus, the B&Bs provides sustainable practices like recycling or changing towels on request

- LOCAL GUIDES - Hiring local guides for how they tell their territory. In this way we could learn about the culture and way of life directly from those who live it and put money into local hands and economies

- FARE WORKING CONDITIONS - Defining a tariff policy that calls for a clear decision-making freedom of the price by its suppliers, stakeholders, partners and local guides

- TAILOR MADE EXPERIENCES - Organizing tailor made experiences for the limit size of 8-10 people because we believe that larger group could not join the real experience and could otherwise impact on the local communities

- CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING - Offering real life experiences, which promote cross-cultural understanding like the visit of the traditional boatyard in Acitrezza or the several stops during the wandering in Catania, where the travellers could meet all the local vendors, chat with them, learning their stories (helped by their trusted local guide). We strongly believe, as Italian, that cooking is the right way to learn a different culture: the cooking class is an exquisite possibility for the traveller to touch with their hands the millennial Italian love for the food, for the traditional recipes.

- LOCAL SUPPLIERS - Recommending local eateries and stores to our travellers to engage locally-owned and operated services to support local people (like artisans, wine producers, organic farmers and so more). We chose them one by one, shaking their hands, learning their stories and feeling the passion they put in their own activities. During the wandering in Catania it could be possible, for example, to taste fried fish in the fish market directly from the fishermen: our local guide will advise travellers where buying from who has sustainable fishing practices. Even tasting oil from the families who produced is the right wat to understand better the importance of this “gold” ingredients for the Italian cuisine and for its communities

- RESIZING SEASONALITY – This Travel Experience emphasize the interesting aspects (events, traditions and natural views) of Sicily in low season as well. This region has a temperate climate all year long; for this reason we suggest our travellers to visit it when is less crowded (from November to February as well)

- ARTISAN AND IMMATERIAL HERITAGE – Helping to keep alive traditions and supporting ancient knowledge, like the historical shipyard of Acitrezza, where there is one of the last axe masters and craftsmen of Catania area. Thank to him and the other people who work inside the boatyard, the ancient art of crafting traditional Sicilian boats is not (yet) forgotten. In fact, we strongly believed that it is necessary to preserve Acitrezza from all the projects, which want to transform this village in another touristic harbor

- SLOW TOURISM - Promoting slow tourism as an alternative to everything-at-once, which allow traveller the “luxury” of look, taste and feel its final destination

- UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL DAILY EXPERIENCES - Promoting less famous Sicilian destinations by proposing unique and original daily experiences, like in the Acitrezza Village (near Catania), an authentic fishing village, where is possible to visit an old shipyard, in which four generations have built wooden boats entirely by hand, and learn all the stories behind the fishermen

- RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL CODE OF CONDUCT – Each traveller will receive our Responsible Travel Code of Conduct before arriving in Sicily. In addition, our local guide will explain during each daily experience the right travel code and will answer to whichever question concerning it
