Description of Cycling tour of China

This is a leisurely paced cycling tour of China taking in the country’s cultural and natural highlights from Beijing to Shanghai over the course of a two week small group tour.

All of our team from head office to our cycle guides have lived and worked in China and we know the country inside out so as to give our cycle groups the most authentic and unique experience possible both on and out of the saddle.

Most of the roads that we use in rural areas are paved and we cover, on average, daily distances of 40kms so as to give you a good impression of the surrounding countryside and urban areas without wearing you out completely.

Wherever we stop we always recommend local restaurants and tell you more about the area surrounding each and every accommodation so as to give you every opportunity to explore independently as well as in the company of your cycle group guide.

Our cycling days are flexible and we encourage cyclists to stop, take photos, and rest when there’s a great view so as to really enjoy the whole holiday rather than constantly sweating it out climbing up hills.

The route itself takes you from Beijing to the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall before heading south by overnight sleeper train to Guilin. This presents an efficient way to travel as part of the two week itinerary in order to place you closer to the Li River, Yangshuo and your final destination, Shanghai.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Cycling tour of China

Environment

Since 2010, we are proud to be CSR-certified by TourCert – a certification which demands constant improvement on corporate responsibility issues which we work hard to fulfil.

During this trip, we aim to minimise transfer by car or plane and cover all possible distances by bicycle, foot and train. At the beginning of the tour, we cycle directly out of Beijing to the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. In Guilin we stay on our bicycles all the way from Guilin city to Yangshuo. This will keep emmissions at a minimum while giving our participants the whole picture of China's urban, suburban and rural culture.

In order to further reduce emmissions, we travel both our longer transfers by train. (2000 km from Beijing to Guilin in a sleeper train and 1.200 km from Guilin to Shanghai in a day train).

To limit the damage to our planet caused by long-distance flights, we cooperate with atmosfair and recommend our customers to compensate their CO2-footprint by donating to the climate protection projects supported by atmosfair.

Our tour guides are instructed to reduce waste by preferring regionally produced fruit from the market over heavily packaged goods from the supermarket. Participants as well as drivers will be advised to follow this example and use only public wastebins for disposal.

We are careful not to leave any traces of garbage or harmed plants at any place we vistit, keeping the landscape as beautiful and clean (or even cleaner) as we find it.

Community

To support local businesses and keep in close touch with the local culture, we select small and family enterprises as partners for our tours.

In Beijing, for example, we stay at the Lüsongyuan - a small hotel in a traditional Chinese courtyard located in the heart of the hutongs North of the Forbidden City. For many years we have established and fostered good and friendly ties to managers and staff of this hotel who are employed to fair conditions.

We support local structures as much as we can, employing drivers native to the places we visit who work at standard to above standard market conditions.

For food, we advise our guides to choose restaurants which serve regional dishes and buy local produce such as fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

Respect for the regional culture is one of our core concerns. Our tour guides have acquired deep knowledge of the Chinese everyday-culture and customs and will share their knowledge with the group to raise awareness and respect among towards the foreign culture.

Through our guide, we aim to establish friendly and direct relations to the locals, helping both sides to understand each other and increase mutual respect. If requested by the group, the tour guide will help the participants to learn useful phrases in Chinese to enable them to engage with the locals indipendently.

In the past, we have had people with disabilities join this tour and have successfully adjusted the routines to fit their special needs.
