Description of Active holiday in Sicily

This holiday to Sicily is a fairly active one, exploring the island’s cultural and natural heritage on boat trips, by trekking and cycling. Starting in Siracusa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, discover this impressive, intriguing, solemn yet sumptuous city, packed with stories from ancient times. Especially its old centre, known as Ortigia, which feels like a place where time has stopped.

You will start this amazing travel experience by tasting delicious Sicilian street food: your local guide, who will be with you throughout the holiday, will lead you through the lively centre of Ortigia where you will not fail to be overwhelmed by all your senses! And then, if you like, explore Ortigia in an APECAR (three-wheeler), the traditional Italian transportation in the 60s.

One of the best ways to discover the coast on this holiday is by taking a boat trip from Siracusa, exploring the marine marvels of Plemmirio Marine Reserve and also doing some snorkelling and cave swimming, depending on the season of course. One of our other activities, cycling in and around the
archaeological site of Pantalica (UNESCO site from 2005) is an attractive proposition all year round, however.

The second half of your Sicily holiday is from a base in Ragusa in the south. This stunning, baroque town, and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the valley. The historic centre of the town is called Ibla, and is a stunning collection of baroque architecture, narrow streets, picturesque lanes, cafés, churches and gardens. As well as superb food, of course.

The finale of this trip is a hike along the Hyblean or Iblea coast, with rolling hills dipping in and out of the most idyllic coves, and the deepest blue sea stretching out all around you.

During this trip, you will be staying in small, locally owned accommodation in the hearts of both Siracusa and Ragusa, with five nights in the former and four in the latter, staying on a bed and breakfast basis. The price of the holiday also includes 2 street lunches and one packed lunch. As well as two guided city tours and three excursions or activities, with all transport and airport transfers included.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Active holiday in Sicily

Environment

Our aim is to make our Travel Experiences sustainable for the long term: we know that tourism can have both an exceptionally positive and potentially negative impact on local communities. For this reason, we promote responsible travel that means: to respect and benefit local people, their cultures, economy and the environment.

We start from the beginning, helping our travellers to choose their customized daily experiences based on these sustainable categories:
- Green
- Hand-made
- Eat local
- Live local
- Sport
- Adrenaline

Furthermore, we try to organize Carbon Offset trips and we do it since the design of our Travel Experiences.
For this one, in particular, we minimised carbon emissions making the following considerations:

- LOCAL SERVICES - We choose local suppliers which had adopted sustainable practices, like the Association of local guides which help us to organize several daily experiences in the territory of Ragusa; they strongly believe like us in the sustainability and each experience is thought to not impact on the environment and the local community
- WATER CONSERVATION - We support initiatives that encourage conservative use of water (like refilling water bottles or turning off water when brushing teeth). For this purpose, we kindly ask to our travellers to read the Responsible Travel Conduct what we will send before departing for Sicily, which is a region that has been suffering periodically of drought (especially in summer season)
- LOCAL FOOD AND GOODS - We include and strongly inspire our travellers to eat locally produced food and goods (like organic food, natural local products which come straight from the garden to the kitchen), like during the wandering both in Siracusa and Ragusa. In each destination we chose local and authentic places, like fresh markets, where is possible to taste local food, usually from who produced it. For example, during all the food and wine experience near Ragusa, travellers will taste only fresh products produced locally in the countryside nearby, meeting all the local suppliers and learning the stories behind each food product
- WATER BOTTLES - We encourage our travellers to refill a water bottle from water 'bubblers' where available to avoid unnecessary purchasing of bottled water and the subsequent waste disposal issues
- RECYCLING – Our Local guides also provide travellers with awareness on how they can reduce and recycle in Sicily
- PUBLIC AND ECOLOGICAL TRANSPORT – Since we have a high range of biking tours in our offered experiences, we strongly encourage our travellers to choose ecological transportation like bicycle during their free time, especially in the area nearby Siracusa since there is the outstanding Natural Reserve of Vendicari
- NATURAL PARK AND NATURAL RESERVE – During this Travel experience, travellers will visit the Archaeogical Park of Pantalica, one of the most famous archaeological site of Sicily and from 2005 is part of the UNESCO heritage. Placed near Siracusa on a cliff that overlooks the deep valley of Anapo, is also a wonderful natural oasis, immersed in a wild environment. They will enjoy the Marine Reserve of Plemmirio as well, established in 2005 for its 2,500 hectares of salt water and beautiful emerald green seabed’s, which have given back many amphorae, planking, shipwrecks and other archaeological finds.

Community

This Travel Experience is planned to ensure that we support local communities by:

- PROMOTING UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES – We strongly believe in the development of community participation process in the management and sustainable conservation of World Heritage sites. For this reason, we promote our partnership with local vendors that organize activities in the UNESCO sites, respecting these special and unique environments. For this Travel Experience, we chose the city of Siracusa and its old center Ortigia and the Archaeological Park of Pantalica (UNESCO sites from 2005 ) and Ragusa (from 2002)
- SMALLER-SCALE LOCALLY-OWNED ACCOMMODATION – Choosing local B&Bs, like the ones of this trip both in Siracusa and Ragusa. Located both in the old centres of the cities, all bright and near all the facilities, they could be the best starting point to live the travel experience as a local. Thus, the B&Bs provides sustainable practices like recycling or changing towels on request
- LOCAL GUIDES - Hiring local guides for how they tell their territory. In this way we could learn about the culture and way of life directly from those who live it and put money into local hands and economies
- FARE WORKING CONDITIONS - Defining a tariff policy that calls for a clear decision-making freedom of the price by its suppliers, stakeholders, partners and local guides
- TAILOR MADE EXPERIENCES - Organizing tailor made experiences for the limit size of 8-10 people because we believe that larger group could not join the real experience and could otherwise impact on the local communities
- CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING - Offering real life experiences, which promote cross-cultural understanding like the journey in Siracusa with the APECAR (three-wheeler): this is a way to make travellers discover an old type of transportation that in the past characterized the territory until the late 60s. Thanks to young cooperative organizations, this way of transport is having a second life: travellers could see with the eyes of a local what is all around him/her and have a fun memory as well
- LOCAL SUPPLIERS - Recommending local eateries and stores to our travellers to engage locally-owned and operated services to support local people (like artisans, wine producers, organic farmers and so more). We chose them one by one, shaking their hands, learning their stories and feeling the passion they put in their own activities. During the wandering in Siracusa it could be possible, for example, to taste fish dishes in the fish market directly from the fishermen: our local guide will advise travellers where buying from who has sustainable fishing practices.
- RESIZING SEASONALITY – This Travel Experience emphasize the interesting aspects (events, traditions and natural views) of Sicily in low season as well. This region has a temperate climate all year long; for this reason we suggest our travellers to visit it when is less crowded (from November to February as well)
- ARTISAN AND IMMATERIAL HERITAGE – Helping to keep alive traditions and supporting ancient knowledge, taking people to visit artisan shops during the wanderings
- SLOW TOURISM - Promoting slow tourism as an alternative to everything-at-once, which allow traveller the “luxury” of look, taste and feel its final destination
- UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL DAILY EXPERIENCES - Promoting less famous Sicilian destinations by proposing unique and original daily experiences, like the trekking along the Hyblaean coast or the ride on the traditional APE car.
- RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL CODE OF CONDUCT – Each traveller will receive our Responsible Travel Code of Conduct before arriving in Sicily. In addition, our local guide will explain during each daily experience the right travel code and will answer to whichever question concerning it
