Responsible tourism: Learn Hindi holiday in India

Environment

We encourage guests to travel with their own refillable water bottles. Filtered water is now available in the hotels we stay in and apart from on long train journeys the purchase of bottled water is rarely necessary.

On this holiday we encourage a visit to the local Jabarkhet Nature Reserve. A team of volunteers cleared the land from over grazing from domestic animals and litter. It has now develop into a fabulous habitat. There is a small entrance fee, that goes towards the maintenance of the site. We are supporters of the site, we also promote the guided walks to those that stay at the language school.

In central India, we support the charity FRANK Water and their partners Samerth Charitable Trust. We have raised significant funds through sponsored runs and walks that we have organised for our guests in India. This has funded several major projects including a Rain Water Harvesting System; a large pond and the sinking of a bore well in a village that was without water due to the effects of climate change.

We are in constant negotiation with local government in Chhattisgarh, where most of our holidays are based, to tackle noise and litter pollution.

Community

We choose accommodation providers that offer long term employment to their staff and don't work with those who only employ seasonal staff. We always encourage our guests to eat locally and avoid large chain hotels and restaurants. We employ local guides everywhere during this trip.

We seek out local enterprises, such as the Himalayan weavers who have rescued local weaving traditions and re-introduced natural dying methods. We encourage our guests to visit, and support such enterprises.

At our base in Chhattisgarh we have set up a sewing school for the women from the local village. They have been experimenting with making reusable sanitary pads. The women are making the pads for their own benefit and helping the local community. The sewing school has become a hub for the women and children of the village. We have also started a small children's library that provides pens and paper.
