Stockholm hiking holiday

Description of Stockholm hiking holiday
Explore Sweden’s capital and enjoy remote walks right on its doorstep with this Stockholm hiking holiday. Stockholm is an exciting modern city that’s also surrounded by nature in the form of parks, reserves and the beautiful islands of the Stockholm archipelago. Within the city limits there is the Ecopark – an urban oasis for the city’s populace – plus canals and a long coastline. Once you’ve explored Stockholm on foot, you can easily see how it’s one third water, one third parks and only one final third buildings. There’s a real sense of space here, and wonderful views everywhere you turn.
As well as walking within Stockholm, the city is also a great base for discovering the natural landscapes that lie right on its boundaries. All of the hikes on this six day, self guided holiday can be reached via public transport or simply by walking straight from your hotel’s doorstep. Each of the four varied hikes has a different feel and reveals different landscapes. Discover the forests and lakes at Tyresta National park, the city views and lovely old cottages of Stockholm’s southern island, the beautiful Twenties suburbs that line Lake Mälaren’s shores and the wonderful Stockholm archipelago on pretty Gällnö Island.
There is time to enjoy Stockholm city life, too. Explore its superb museums, including the Vasa Ship Museum, and the Gamla Stan, or Old Town, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval city centres. You’ll stay in a comfortable small boutique hotel in the centre of the city, so you’re also close to restaurants, bars and great shopping.
This hiking holiday is completely flexible, and you can change the number of days, choose when to start it, stay as long as you like in Stockholm and decide when to do the hikes. Spend an extra day in the city if you prefer, or add on another night so you can explore the seaside village of Trosa and hike up to Royal Tullgarn Palace, enjoying the Baltic Sea and forest scenery along the way. Throughout, you’ll have hiking notes, maps and 24 hour backup.

Responsible Travel
Planet
All our trips are about enjoying and experiencing the natural and cultural beauty of the region, in a respectful and considerate way. Our trips are only run with small private groups to ensure that impact on the environment is minimal at all times. We are a member of the Svenska Ekoturismföreningen (Swedish Ecotourism Association) which works towards an improved tourism which protects and takes responsibility for our delicate natural and cultural environment. Our company beliefs reflect this vision.
Hiking puts little stress on the environment and allows you to appreciate the surroundings in an environmentally friendly way as you follow established hiking trails through for example Tyresta National park. We always provide guests with information about the Swedish 'right to roam' in the nature, so that due care is taken when hiking through sensitive areas.
As our trips are self-guided, we make extra efforts to provide travellers with as much information about the local area as possible, including information about bird, animal and plantlife as well as historical and cultural information. Look out for roaming red deer, fallow deer, red squirrels and moose, which can all be seen just on the edge of town. The archipelago island of Gällnö has a mixed flora and fauna including orchids and sea eagles.
We take responsibility of ensuring that rubbish is handled accordingly. both in the countryside and in the office, with a developed sorting system. Use of paper is spared with all marketing made online to avoid the production of own brochures. Travellers are encouraged to recycle as much literature as possible that they are provided with at the start of the trip.
People
We wholeheartedly support the local economy - our guests want to experience the genuine region in which they are travelling. Whether you are hiking in Tyresta National Park, on Gällnö island or along Lake Mälaren, we recommend a visit to the locally run cafes and businesses to help support the area as well as enjoy contact with the locals and sample local produce. We prefer to use accommodation that is smaller and more personal which is why we have chosen the locally run Hellsten hotel chain. This is a a chain of four hotels in Stockholm all of which enjoy a personal atmosphere and excellent service, and a far cry from the business hotel environment.
We only run small group trips which means that we can offer our guests a more individual, personal experience that does not impact on the rural environments they visit.
Our trips would quite simply not be the same without the support of the local community.
