Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Accommodation & Food
On this trip we spend seven nights in a combination of hotels and guesthouses. Where possible we prefer to stay in small, family run accommodation as our stay directly supports the communities we visit, since it creates employment opportunities and usually most of the income generated is reinvested into the area. We’ll have the chance to experience a traditional South African BBQ and have a trans-African food experience at Gold Restaurant on day seven.

Activity & Environment
During this trip we take part in a range of non-detrimental activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking, as we are very conscious of our effects on the places we visit. Few trips have as little impact on the environment and local residents as this. We also operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy, whereby we ensure no rubbish including plastic has been left behind. When exploring Table Mountain, we opt to hike to the summit rather than using the cable car, where we can admire the views over Camps Bay and Robben Island. On our descend, we take the Skeleton Gorge path to the Kirstenbosch Gardens.
On day three, we’ll cycle for two hours to Boulder’s Beach which is home to South Africa’s 3000-strong penguin colony, and day four we’ll have the opportunity to kayak alongside these black-and-white creatures. We also spend a day in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, which is home to leopards, honey badgers and baboons, although they’re rather shy. During our spare time, guests can also opt to try the South African version of canyoning, kloofing.

Group Size
Since this is a small group tour, we will have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, small family-run accommodations that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through energy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

Community & Culture
When visiting Stellenbosch, we will have a free afternoon where guests are advised to stroll around the oak-lined streets and purchase souvenirs. By doing so, our visit is financially giving back to places we visit by supporting local businesses and craftsmen. On day five, we spend our time tasting authentic wines, touring three estates. Here we will learn more about South African wines and pair them with chocolate, cheese and boerebraai tapas. On our final day the choice is ours, recommended activities include a township tour or a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Our visit to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve will also support the community as our entrance fees will contribute towards the upkeep and maintenance of the reserve.
