Responsible tourism
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Transport: On this trip you will be travelling on a mixture of public buses, trains, private charter buses and boats and ferries. By using shared means of public transport we are not contributing to further road emissions and are maximising our interactions with local communities. Also, by running overland trips we reduce carbon emissions by not flying between countries.
Wildlife: The Guiding Company we use to visit the orang-utans in Indonesia are carefully selected for their knowledge and commitment to the local environment. Their knowledge of the local flora and fauna is impressive and they ensure that our groups leave as minimal an impact as possible.
The Impacts of this Trip
On this trip we stay at a variety of small locally run hotels/hostels from rustic lodges to beach 'bungalows'. We encourage our travellers to immerse themselves in the local culture and to support local enterprises along the way. We very keenly promote local small scale food and drink suppliers, including the local palm wine 'tuak' in Indonesia! The Batak people of Indonesia, in particular, whom we spend time with at Lake Danau Toba are known for their love of singing and playing music, and 'tuak' is just the thing to get you fired up for the singalong! Our stay in the Batak community helps support local people very directly - we can hire out bikes/scooters/kayaks from them; and indulge in massages and boat trips! For the culinary-inclined there are opportunities here to partake in cookery courses too. Local wood carvings also make great souvenirs!
During parts of this trip, although we may be visiting beach destinations, we are very aware that it would not be culturally appropriate to dress as we might on a beach back at home. Our crew therefore give guidance on suitable dress and behaviour.
