Responsible tourism: Borneo diving holiday in Kalimantan

Environment

As part of our efforts to support and conserve the local environment we only work with local partners who adopt the same practises as we do. The Nabucco Island Resort has been subtly built in the surrounding environment without a single tree being cut down for its building work. Water is heated through solar energy; sewage waste is treated ecologically and through compostable treatment which is done on site. The resort also has a rainwater processing plant.

Nunkan Resort has similarly been built to very strict ecological standards and hosts a desalination system and the same solar energy and sewage treatment facilities as Nabucco.

Our stay inland at the Samboja Lodge which is managed by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation gives our guests an insight into the efforts it takes to rebuild the rainforest and the importance of its preservation for the critically endangered Borneo orangutan. The lodge has been built based on local architecture and all of the interior and exterior walls are made from recycled materials. Cosmetic touches are made by traditional handicraft and produced by local and Dayak communities in the immediate area. All profits earned by the lodge go to the BOS Fund in support of local wildlife and communities.

Community

All of our local partners have established mutually strong relationships with the local communities, complying with all local rules and regulations such as a minimum wage requirement and fair trade rules. Our local partners also only employ local guides and drivers thereby keeping all monies paid to staff in the local community.

Our chosen resorts are actively supporting the local communities- by employing local staff and actively improvng the healthcare, education systems and skills of the people of the islands. These initiatives are paid for with a portion of the profits from the resorts.

We also encourage tour members to 'buy responsibly' at local markets and Warungs (family owned shops). Traveling in small groups enables us to limit our impact in more remote and culturally sensitive regions throughout the tour. Transfers and connections are also managed by small local operators ensuring an even distribution of funds are directly benefits local communities.
