Responsible tourism: Komodo and Java land and diving safari

Environment

As part of our efforts to support and conserve the local environment we only work with local partners who adopt the same practises as we do. The Kalimaya Dive Resort has been built using locally sourced materials, traditionally constructed by Indonesian teams using a combination of teak and mahogany sourced from local farms.

Recycled water is used for the watering of plants, grass and flowers and drinking water is provided free in all rooms and served in stainless steel bottles. Part of your holiday cost is paid as conservation and marine park fees which contribute to the protection of local wildlife.

We provide in depth briefings and enforce principles on how to view and interact with wildlife above and below the surface so that we can reduce the impact of our visit as much as possible. In terms of consumption we aim to limit the amount of plastic and waste products used whilst on tour - refilling bottled water is highly encouraged, we make a local donation of 15 per original bottle returned at the end of each tour (i.e tour members have only used one bottle for the entire trip). We also encourage tour members to limit their use of shampoos, laundry and cosmetic/cleaning products during the tour.

Community

We are using a number of local partners which not only helps us to create a special kind of experience but also benefits local communities directly.

Local dive and tour guides will be used throughout the tour. We use resorts that encourage local employment and train people from the surrounding communities providing skills and educating locals, and often helping them to learn English. Transfers and connections are managed by small local operators ensuring monies directly benefit local communities.

Particular emphasis is placed upon employing local diving staff from the fishing industry such that they can use their vast knowledge of the area for conservation rather than using destructive fishing practices. We also encourage tour members to 'buy responsibly' at local markets and Warungs (family owned shops). Traveling in small groups enables us to limit our impact in more remote and culturally sensitive regions throughout the tour, particularly in Komodo regions where lifestyle tends to be more primitive.
